Want to Watch a Film on a Plane? Bring Your Tablet, Say Airlines - by Nadia Khomami/ Flights/ theguardian/ theguardian.com

"Grab your iPads, travellers. The in-flight TV screen is set to become a thing of the past on long-haul flights from the UK, with airlines claiming that passengers would prefer to watch films on their smartphones and tablets.

The low-cost Canadian carrier WestJet is launching a new transatlantic service out of Gatwick next year without seatback entertainment systems for the first time. The airline will instead stream content directly to passengers’ handheld devices, using a wireless internet network provided by satellites..."

Also need to remember to download your carrier's entertainment app before your first flight. Otherwise on board they'll charge for WIFI to get the app.

Some US carriers are doing this e.g, Delta and Alaska ? ?

A tablet or smart phone screen is so much better (resolution, brightness) vs. the crappy in-seat tiny screens. I have really enjoyed the flights that have this entertainment offering.

Doesn't work for people like me that don't have smart phones or tablets.

To me, more BS from the airlines- it will set a trend to offer no amenities whatsoever for higher airfare.

Another reason not to fly unless absolutely have to.

For long flights (6 hours or More) they should have inflight movies, music etc. Unless they put power plugs at every seat, because the iPad will drain and you will be without power for the duration. I enjoy being able to use my iPad it drowns out the chatter and crying babies of people on the flight. I usually fall asleep though, just like at home watching TV.

I assume this is just for coach seats? I can't imagine they would remove the existing entertainment offerings from first class and business class.

I think it's a great idea (plan). More space, better picture, more choice, less cost for the airlines, what's not to like. And for those who don't have a device, it opens up opportunity for pre-loaded, one way rentals.

Bring it on!

Alaska's planes have outlets to keep our tablets charged during flight.

I've already experienced this on multiple flights, and it works well. I also like not having the passenger sitting behind me continually stab my seat trying to get the system to work, too.

I like it. I don't like the in flight movies. I find them annoying. I'd rather listen to podcasts or play games or snooze. I dislike the tv/movie distractions.

Hawaiian has ipad mini for rent, free in first class, full of movies, music, tv shows, etc. Must be a pain to update the content every month so streaming sounds easier.

On a flight to Hawaii they showed "Dirty Dancing 2: Havana Nights." It was a terrible movie. On the flight back from Hawaii they announced that they would be showing "Dirty Dancing 2: Havana Nights." People booed quite loudly.
