Does anyone have experience with Waldorf schools? As I understand, this school‘s philosophy is experiential and helping kids to think for themselves. I am wondering how it compares to other private schools and the public schools.

I used to be a high school teacher many years ago. I worked in the Public School system. My personal opinion is it’s the individual school and it’s teachers and their pedagogy, whether public or private, Montessori or Waldorf, that matters.

Also, from experiences, every parent has certain things they value. Some value, as an example, Spanish Emerson, some value Christianity or another religion. So, personally, I would not get hung up on the teaching style. I would get hung up on a certain school’s mission, vision and values that are closely aligned to the values you think best suit your child’s needs.

I know many a teacher who works in the public system who challenges their students to think because that’s the schools focus. Many excellent public teachers use the exploratory model to help students develop critical thinking skills.

Maybe interview different schools and ask the hard questions on what you want as outcomes. That will help you decide which school is best regardless of teaching philosophy.

I dunno much about Waldorf schools. They seem more self-indulgent than fundamental.
OTOH, I do like their salads. <ducking>

DW's cousin's three kids all went to Sacramento Waldorf. They thought it was great, and even bought a house on the street leading to it to facilitate activities. One interesting feature is that the same teacher stays with the class as they advance.

Talent312 You Nailed it. I have met parents who are very happy with the program. However I also have a friend who son-in-law attended and she says she wished they had spent more time on the basics as he is very self-centered and lacks ambition. She was a teacher. A very important California family's children attends Waldorf school.

Near the sea.
People love it or hate it. They used to not introduce reading until 3rd grade. I think they might be good for those kids that fall between the cracks, more vulnerable, able to function without any special services.
