Weather has been nice and sunny for the most part with light tradewinds keeping us cool.

They put us in Hale 4 on the second floor with a nice lagoon view. I suspect this might actually count as Oceanview here since it is there in the distance. But as exchangers, I am pleased with the unit assignment.

Happy Labor Day! We will be off to WPORV next week.

Yep, that looks like an ocean view villa in Waiohai terminology. Kind of misleading.

The map we were given says oceanview/islandview for Hale 4. I assume the ones facing the parking lot are islandview.

Funny how expectations mix into one's vacation experience. We were thrilled with the unit assignment. However, we would have been disappointed if we knew nothing about the property and had purchased an oceanview unit.

You are absolutely right. Happiness is mostly about how reality compares to expectations. If you expect a bad assignment and get an average one you are happier than if you expect a great assignment and get only a good one.

Waiohai Ocean view

Were in Kauai last week. We were there for two weeks, the first one was my Island view unit. We rented a second and paid a premium for an ocean view. And hard to believe, but the parking lot is the ocean view. We were assigned one in Hale. My SO was so annoyed, because our island view, which is what your photo looks like, was far superior. We asked to give up the ocean/parking lot view, which they couldn't do based on their rules. We kept going down the the front desk to see if something else was available and one of the desk associates finally wen to talk to the supervisor who eventually found us an ocean view in Hale 1, which was gorgeous.

Apparently they get a lot of complaints about the ocean view because, although the looked, for an ocean view for us, they were clearly annoyed and muttered things like that is the way it is because you can see the ocean past the parking lot. But there third time was a charm and we got an associate and a supervisor who went out to their way to find us a real ocean view.

I also had an issue with this at Waiohai. I checked in on the 30th of Oct, 2015. I am a Platinum Marriott Rewards member, so in theory, that should have given a tiny bit better view despite it being an II exchange because Marriott likes to keep the Platinums happy.

I was assigned a unit that overlooked the parking at Poipu Beach Park. I said no, and fought with with desk clerk, Glenda, over it. She got a supervisor, Angel, who called "control" and they said the best they could do was Hale 4, but at least it was straight on out to the ocean over the grounds. Yep, ocean being something I needed glasses to see. But better than a over a parking lot to the OV. I asked about switching during people's checkout on Saturday. Angel got me hooked into 2205, which was great. Nice OV over pool, close to all the amenities. And a breeze, unlike Hale 4.

But shoots, their definition of OV is ridiculous, in general. I thought the Marriott Hotel in Wailea was the most deceptive about OV rooms. Nope, this is worse. And until I got to Angel, the supervisor, I was getting no where, just the company line.

So what view categories do they have at this resort? is there a category that offers an unobstructed view?

I have been look at a few ads, a couple didn't mention the view, so pretty sure the is no ocean involved on those...

I love my Waiohai. That being said, it's strongest feature is not the view(s).
OV and IV.
The 'ocean front' portions of Hale 1 and 8 should probably be OF, but they are not. Additionally, some of the OV units, Hale 4, 6 etc..., have very minimal views of the water and may overlook parking lots, roads etc... But, just like some other HI island views, the worst are the IV units overlooking the parking lots (2,3,4). The interior views are peaceful and nice, but can be loud around kiddy pool times. The beach, pool, bar, trail etc.. are all wonderful. IMHO, you don't go to MAW for the views.

We stayed in Hale 5 once and had a "tree" view. I was fine with that. Every day when we went to the parking lot, I'd see people on the first floor on Hale 4 on their lanai and I'd be super happy that I wasn't in their unit. I'll probably not return since as a lowly exchanger, my luck is likely to run out.

Thanks that is very helpful. Right now i only own HGVC, but am considering adding Marriott portfolio in next year or two. We We stayed nextdoor at Kiahuna Plantation last month and I was impressed with the grounds and amenities Waiohai.

So, here's my HO:

I would have purchased Ko Olina 2br OV lock-off. My wife decided that we would purchase a Waiohai 2br IV.

In all fairness, I love MAW. But MKO made better financial and trade sense. If you can stand to book MKO and then trade into another resort knowing that you have your MKO waiting for you.... I'd buy MKO. Easy to rent, easy to trade, easy to lock-off etc.. And, it's a great resort.

I haven't sampled the joys of MOC/MM1 yet, but that's high up on my list--maybe even this year for a week before MAW. Come on flex-trade. I'm sure many will chime-in to support a MOC purchase.
good luck and great vaca's
