Stayed there for a week in February and felt like I could have been in LA, Scottsdale etc. Happy it is there for those who enjoy it but not for me (although the asian art at the Hilton hotel was truly amazing and a wonderful treat to see).

We have been to the Hilton's at the Waikoloa Village many times and loved it. Later this year we are going to stay for the first time at the Ocean Tower Timeshare. We are going to be staying without a car so that traffic will not be a problem except for the cab coming and going to and from the airport and doing big food shopping the first day there for the week.

The hotel name is Hilton Waikoloa Village, even though its physically located in the Waikoloa Beach Resort. That is somewhat confusing, though I would guess many tourists don't even know there is an actual Waikoloa Village up the hill.

I would guess at some point Hilton corp decided that if their flagship resort is called Hilton Hawaiian Village, we can add a second major resort and call it Hilton Waikoloa Village.

The village "up the hill" started as a land donation by Boise-Cascade company. It became a residence for workers (construction and staff) at the Kohala coast resorts. The Hilton resort was originally developed by Hyatt, the largest developed at the time, but it fell on hard times and Hilton bought it. They probably should have added Beach to the name, like Marriott Waikoloa Beach resort, which does have an ocean beach - A Bay.

The village has become a retirement community, the beach resort workers are mostly bussed in from Hilo now.

You have about a 25 mile cab ride from the airport.

This new shopping center is up the hill in the village. It's a crossroads of people traveling up and back from the Kohala / Kona coast over to the Hilo side. So the traffic problems mentioned are not down at the resort.

This is putting it gently. Waikiki and the Kohala coast could hardly be more different. I filled my tank twice in the week we were at Kings Land, and we never went past Tex’s to the north or Kona to the south, and avoided the saddle road entirely.

Definitely agree with this - I could be persuaded to go without a car in Honolulu or perhaps even Ka’anapali Beach/Lahaina on Maui given shuttle availability/public transportation/nearby restaurants/proximity to beachfront etc.

Having just gotten off a plane from staying at HGVC Kingsland, there is no way I could see it being feasible stay without a vehicle in the. Waikoloa resort area unless you really just want to primarily sit by a pool or play golf (or perhaps a helicopter ride).

Thanks for clearing up the confusion. I have been up to the Paniolo Greens and know where it is compared to the Hiltons. Because the names are so similar it was confusing.

We have been to the Hiltons in the Waikoloa Resort a number of times so we know the area pretty well and have done many things with a car before. We have never stays at the Ocean Towers or the hotel so we want that experience. Here is my thinking:

RENTING A CAR

- Rent a cars are about $500 for the week + Liability and Collision insurance(since we no longer have a car) + Gas? $800 total

- We will stay for a week so there is no reservation fee since we are Hilton Honors. It is about $40/night to park there. Total $280.

STAYING WITHOUT A CAR

- The Cab ride to a from the airport is about $80 each way + tip. $200.

- One cab ride to and from the supermarket in Waikoloa for a big week shopping $25 each way + tip Total $60

- We have the shuttles and our feet to get us around the resorts, and Kings and Queens Shopping areas

$300 for gas for a week? That is one heck of a lot of driving! Figure $5/gal and your car gets 25 mpg, that is 1500 miles -- over 200 miles a day. The Big Island isn't that big. You would have to circumnavigate the island every single day to get that many miles in!

Kurt added to the cost of the rental car will be some cost for liability and collision insurance each day since we no longer have a personal car insurance policy that provides insurance. I am estimating that at about $30/day.

We know that parking is free at the other HGVC resorts and have staying many nights at Kingsland and the Bay Club. Like I said we wanted to stay at the Ocean Towers since we never had stayed there before and it is a special location.
