Typically, exchanging works like this:
You deposit your week into RCI.
You receive a number of points which we call TPU trade power units. This is what RCI has deemed your week is worth.
Thousands of other RCI members deposit their weeks in RCI. This creates the inventory from which your are able to Exchange via RCI.
You search for another resort/week and see what you can find that fits the amount of TPU you currently have.
You confirm by paying RCI's $249 exchange fee.
You receive a confirmation from RCI and you go to that resort on the check-in date.

High season (summer at beach) is worth more than low season,
larger unit is worth more than smaller unit.
Gold Crown resort may be worth more than Silver Crown or unrated resort.

- A few in S and VA, a single resort in NC, MD, PA, and UT, plus Jamaica and the Bahamas
Last minute places are 7500-9000 and not every place even last minute. Some places are closer to 90,000+ points for a 2 BR prime season. Even at your resort a prime 1 BR summer week is around 30,000 points for the week.
If you bought fewer than 7 days ago, you want to look into rescinding ASAP.
