I guess I still have quite a bit to learn what's NOT in the book. For me it is more about learning more about how to use what I have. Right now I have 490,000 points, am gold, temp platinum.
Guess that's good for 2 years.
I liked the idea of credit pooling all points I will not be using for ARP. And thanks for walking me through the 60 day upgrade window. I did call to do first one. One thing I did notice is that when I called, the VC "grabbed what I wanted, before she cancelled my old reservation. If there is a better way info would be nice, orvbasics I am missing.

All the text is in the Member's Directory ... no secret handshake or hidden pocket.

YOU just have to READ that book page by page ... usually 3 times with your trusty HIGHLIGHTER (should use a different color each time).

Just assume YOU KNOW NOTHING and stop assuming YOU THINK you know ....

Until, then ... read the other member's or guest's posts .... think about what might be answered to their questions .... but do NOT offer YOUR GUESS at what MIGHT be an answer.

And if you only have 490,000 Wyndham qualified (you brought direct or via PIC) ... when your BONUS points end .... YOU will be a SILVER VIP .... not a GOLD VIP. Gold VIP starts at 700,000 developer points; Silver VIP starts at 400,000.

That I do know. I will be lifetime gold. One of the few things. The 490,000 was bought direct, the 210,000 is PiC. Lifetime is still available.

yep---490 + 210 is 700.
As for the rep grabbing what you wanted before cancelling your reservation, that's to insure you don't loose both. Since there's no cancelled points anymore, I would do that, too.
As for pooling your points that you don't ARP, I would wait until you have to pool them so you get the 2 years from that dates and not the first of the year. Don't know what it is for Gold, but for Platinum it's 9 months into the year.

It is 6 months into the year for Gold. And credit pooling extends the life 3 years from the date you pool them, not 2.

regarding upgrades, there should be no need to cancel at all. and no need to call in for that matter, Just click on the "search for upgrade" button, If there is something to upgrade into it will pop up

If you are talking about a cancel and rebook strategy for a discount, than yes you should grab the discounted reservation first. But thats what any of us would do. There is no trick and no risk. The risk is waiting until the call center opens. Why not grab that discounted reservation yourself right at 7 am exactly 60 days ahead of check in.

The trick is when there is no availability to grab at 60 days. and the risk is that you cancel a reservation you have been looking forward to for months and lose it

What Ive started to do is create my own availability. For example I make a reservation for a studio and two 2 bedrooms. Inside 60 days and assuming no availability I :

1) cancel and rebook the studio
2) cancel a two bedroom
3) upgrade the studio into the now available two bedroom
4) cancel my extra two bedroom
5) enjoy a vacation in a 2 bedroom suite at half the studio price.

and
no risk because if I screw up and lose one of the reservations, at least I have that second 2 bedroom (no discount) to enjoy.

There you go ...Thats not in the book.

With only 490,000 points, it would be hard to book 3 reservations. Would take most or not all my points. If I still had my resale, it would be possible, at least more so. Right now am recooping from buying direct, so cash flow for now takes priority. In about a year or so, it will would possible to pick up another resale if needed. For now I want to see how what I have works. That is a great idea that I probably would not have thought about, thanks.

Ron, first... thanks for contributing to this forum. Your contributions are straightforward, clearly worded and extremely informative.

What is the likelihood of losing a reservation? It obviously frees up many points if you don't have to duplicate book a 2BR, especially if, like me, you only have 308K points to work with.

in the recent past I was able to count on getting all my cancel and rebooks done with no problems. , I would do it myself when the call center was not open (to cut down on the competition) However my last effort didnt go so well I lost 3 out of 4 I tried, (different days different times) so I called the call center. They got the next 20 done without a problem. So now I call

To answer your guestion regarding odds of success...I think pretty good, but I just dont know. My advice is; dont play with anything thats important to you. In my case I lost 3 reservations worth over $1000 each to me, so that would seem like a big deal, but I did get all my points back and most importantly I got 20 one bedrooms at half the studio rate and about 2million points back to do something else with
so a 85% success rate works for me.. losing 3 is no big deal

In your case if the one you lose is something the family has been looking forward to for over a year, Its a big deal indeed

We use the strategy Ron listed, but canceling with no backup is not for the faint of heart. Many of us have lost units that never came back into the system. My two cents is only upgrade by canceling and rebooking if you are 100% okay with losing that particular unit entirely. When rebooking and upgrading does work, it is awesome!!

. . . canceling with no backup is not for the faint of heart.

Like jumping out of an airplane hoping the parachute rigger did his job.
