I recently became a member of the Villa Del Palmar VPA in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. While I understand that the points system is quite low at just 1,000 points, I was offered unlimited Getaways. Can someone explain how those work and if they’re worth it? If not, I’m considering canceling tomorrow as I’m still within my cancellation period. Thank you!

If I were you I would cancel. I'm not familiar with the term "gateways" but have heard of getaways. If it's a getaway it is through the exchange company Interval International. A getaway is a cash deal instead of an exchange. Anyone who is an Interval International paid up member can use these. It's not an exclusive VPA thing. Anyone with a timeshare can join. The timeshares I use for Interval were all bought resale for very little to nothing at all.

You need to cancel right away. Follow the instructions on the package The gateway they are referring to is paying cash for available resorts on interval international exchange company.
Once you cancel, come back here and learn more on how the system works. Also learn about other systems and then make a decision.

Thank you so much for your input. This is my first membership, and something felt off. The points allocation seemed very low—just 1,000 points every other year—with a biennial maintenance fee of $500. What initially convinced me to join was the appeal of the Getaways. They mentioned that we could potentially book a one-bedroom unit for around $299–$499 per week, depending on the season and location. Essentially, this meant I’d have 1,000 points every other year for a $500 maintenance fee, and on off years, I could take advantage of the Getaways for $299–$499 per week. I truly appreciate your insight on this.

in general its a terrible idea to buy retail based off a nebulous term or perk...we always suggest rescinding and doing your research while you still have time.

you can ALWAYS go back and buy again, but you arent given any time to do much reading at all before your cancellation period ends. That is a terrible way to buy into something that comes with a lifetime of payments.

There are two major exchange companies: interval International(II) and RCI. There are a couple of others that you can use. The exchange company you have access to depends on the resort you own. Some resorts allow access to more than one exchange company. Don't pay more money than you should because the resort promises you access to the getaways. You can get the same thing owning another resort or owning the same resort by buying from a previous owner. In almost all situations, buying from a previous owner would be your best way in. Remember, the getaways are subject to availability. Some are last minute. What you see today may not be there 10 minutes later.
For now, scratch the ownership, cancel the contract. Settle down and learn the systems and exchanges before you decide. A happy timeshare owner is an owner who understands how the system works and understands how to maximize its benefits.

Rescind that NOW no matter what the managers say or do RESCIND NOW.

1) Do you really want to go to Puerto Vallarta every year?
2) Don’t know what kind of contract you bought, but if a salesmen mouth is moving he is lying.
3) Buy a cheap resale week or get one free where you would actually might want to go each year and that exchanges with Interval International you can get a membership and get all the getaways you could ever possibly use.
