My wife and I are going next week. This is our first trip to Mexico. Is there anyone that can give me some additional information about this resort. I have looked on Tug but nothing current.

Thank you in advance for any info I can get.

Try a search of your resort under TripAdvisor. They usually have a number of reviews and we have used them before going to resorts.
Good luck!

We were there a few years ago and really enjoyed it. A beautiful property with lots of activities. The restaurant wasn't great.
Enjoy your trip!

Brownie11927--The first thing you need to understand is that VDPM Flamingos is not really near anything. You can't just walk out the door and walk a few blocks to a restaurant. (Playa del Sol Grande is nextdoor. It's another timeshare resort and also has a restaurant.) VDPM Flamingos is, however, an absolutely beautiful resort with a wonderful staff. It's great for R & R, but not if you want to be in the center of all the action. The resort is north of Nuevo Vallarta and south of Bucerias. You can take a cab to Bucerias for very appx. $7. USD. each way. Bucerias is a small town with a flea market type set-up near the beach, some reasonably priced restaurants, and a nice beach. I like Bucerias a lot; my favorite spot there is Vista Vallarta Hotel at the north end of Bucerias. They have a poolside restaurant and bar where I always make sure to hit happy hour. They have a happy hour around 1 p.m. and around dinner time--and no, I don't hit both. Artemio is the bartender and Chuy is the cook. There is a new Mega grocery store not too far away from VDPM Flamingos, but too far to walk in the heat of August. IMO, staying at VDPM Flamingos, the most important thing you need to know is the bus system. To get to Puerto Vallarta, you will catch the bus right in front of the resort on the south side of the driveway, streetfront. That bus will take you to Walmart. The bus will cost appx. 12 or 16 pesos (I can't remember which) unless it's gone up since December. Twelve pesos is like $1.20. Get off the bus at Walmart. At Walmart, catch any bus that says Centro. Those will be appx 5 or 6 pesos (it's appx 10 pesos to a USD). Don't take any buses that say Tunnel. They take longer and the tunnel has tons of exhaust and little ventilation. To go back to your resort, from downtown Puerto Vallarta, take any bus that says Walmart. Sometimes the bus turns east at Walmart. If that happens, stand up and get off at the next stop and walk the block and a half back to Walmart (I still haven't figured out how to know which bus will turn east at Walmart. Just go with the flow!) At Walmart, go to the northernmost stop (there are two) and take the bus that says RIU. It HAS to say RIU. The RIU bus will take you to your resort--it's basically its last stop. So you have an idea of the stops, here they are: RIU bus (Walmart to Flamingos)=Mayan Palace Nuevo Vallarta area; Paradise Village Mall Nuevo Vallarta; and then eventually VDPM Flamingos. Here are the stops going from your resort TO Walmart: Marlin Restaurant (hop off and walk around the corner to the bus stop and catch another bus if you want to go to Nuevo Vallarta--Paradise Village Mall, etc); Airport; Commercial shopping center; Marina turn off; and finally Walmart. Actually, going into town, the bus' last stop is not Walmart, it's Plaza Las Glorias--but that only complicates things. Just remember Walmart as your main point of focus to change buses. To give you a timeframe for the bus trip, from VDPM Flamingos to Walmart takes appx. 30 minutes. It's probably another 15 minutes from Walmart to downtown. OK-- The bus from Walmart to downtown. Get off as soon as it turns left after a park. It will be the first left turn it makes. From there, walk toward the ocean a half block, and you are at the street the leads to the Malecon (cement boardwalk of sorts). Head south on that street one block and you'll be at Hotel Rosita which begins the Malecon. Hotel Rosita has a very reasonably priced beachfront restaurant and bar and clean restrooms. To catch the bus back from town to Walmart, walk one block east from Hotel Rosita (away from the ocean) to Woolworth's. All the buses stop there. You might want to take an extra facecloth or fingertip towel with you. It will be very hot and humid in Puerto Vallarta this time of year, and the towel will prove useful when you're on the bus or walking around downtown. After you've taken the bus to the Hotel Rosita area a few times, the next time or two you might venture farther south to old town. Just stay on the bus until it goes over a bridge. Then you'll be in old town. There are tons of good restaurants in that area. Don't know anything about the studio units at VDPM Flamingos, but the 1-bdrms have a dishwasher, and they don't provide dishwasher soap. If you have a 1-bdrm, you might pick up some dishwasher soap (have fun figuring that out!)at the grocery store. Also, the 1-bdrm units have a full-size fridge, so you can plan your grocery purchases accordingly. The 1-bdrms have a fantasic balcony--huge. It doesn't get much better. If you've rented a car, you won't need a lot of this info, but oh well. Since you've never been to Mexico, the grocery stores are quite an adventure. I rarely go to Walmart in the USA, but in Puerto Vallarta, it's worth it--especially since the bus stops there. To get bakery goods, grab a pizza style aluminum tray and some tongs. Then you take the items up to the bakery register and they'll tag them with a price. One of my favorites is the chapata rolls at Walmart in Puerto Vallarta. They don't always have them. Walmart is VERY crowded in Puerto Vallarta, so brace yourself. It's all part of the fun. Finally, use precautions with wallets and purses. It's better to be safe than sorry. You might carry your wallet in your front pocket and not leave a purse unattended in a grocery cart. VDPM Flamingos will have a lockbox in the room. You might want to take advantage of that. Vallarta is a very safe tourist destination, but a friend had her purse stolen the Xmas before last at Gigante grocery store in town; she had it in her grocery cart. A national distracted us, and the purse disappeared. Just a word of warning.

Wow. Thank you for your reply. Very, very, informative. Does anyone have a list of restaurants that are a must in Puerto Vallarta? I am thnking about renting a car. Alot of people on this site say to rent from AVIS because it includes some type of insurance. Any additional info would be most appreciated.

Thank you.

There is a new Mega super market just minutes from VDPF. You'll see it when you turn off to the resort. We loved shopping there. They have everything, including alcohol. If you don't rent a car. the taxi shouldn't cost much. The Mega also has an ATM machine in the event you run out of pesos!
We love VDPF - in fact we bought two weeks on the resale market. Beware of the concierage when you check in- this is a ruse to get you to go to the high pressure sales presentation. They do the same thing for the "owner's update". What I did last time was book an appointment to get away from her and then cancelled it later. If you rent a car, you can park it yourself in the underground garage - you don't have to use the valet. Also if you rent a car, be sure to visit Sayulita, San Francisco, and Punta Mita. I'm sure you'll have a great time at VDPF. There is a Puerto Vallarta forum on Trip Advisor that has a wealth of information about restaurants in the area. If you have any other questions, I'll try to help. Adios!

Brownie11927--I looked over the list of restaurants listed on www.puertovallarta.net and the ones that I've heard people rave about were Barcelona (several blocks up the hill from Hotel Rosita), Brasil Steak House, Pipi's, The River Cafe, and Le Kliff. For desserts, Pie in the Sky in Bucerias is popular. La Laguna in Nuevo Vallarta is very good. After you check out the sticky Karen mentioned above, you might Google "Puerto Vallarta restaurants" to find tons of information. Some of the grocery stores have rotiserie chicken stands in front. They usually come with tortillas, chillies, and a salsa type of sauce. Many times you can choose roasted potatoes instead of the tortillas. The chickens are similar in price to what we pay in the states. If you don't feel like going out to eat or cooking, those chickens are tasty and convenient. Regarding driving in Puerto Vallarta, have someone explain the whole left turn thing. In general, you get in one of the far right lanes to make a left.

Thank you everyone for responding. My wife and I are extremely excited about going. We are leaving Aug. 2nd.

If anyone else has any info on Villa del Palmar Flamingos it would be great. But once again, thank you everyone!

What a wonderful Brownie you are . MAny thanks form me too. I am being given a week there in may 2009 as a gift from a friend of ours who cant use hers. Its an efficiency unit 570 squ mtrs , do not know whether it has a balcony or not. Anyhow I will be in SLC the week before and .. I have never been to Mexico. Are there any other things i need to know about the resort. She has offerred to attempt to swap if I want to be elsewhere but since I have never been at all...It really does not matter to me, unless Brownie feels another more central resort would be more the thing. I go with the Brownie. What a response.
THe airfares from SLC were about 300 one way. Is one better to await a sale or just book the thing? How do you find out about the sales. For example in Australia we find out about the Virgin Blue and Jetstar sales by being on the mail list. How about Mexico sales?
And .. I think a car is the best way to go.
Weather inMay Brownie?
Any activiteis in the resort?
Husband likes history and quaint villages, I dont mind resort activities
Brownie you ARE a legend
MAny thanks Gabrielle

Brownei may well be a legend but I did get it wrong. EJC is the Legend of all Legends. What a response. Many thanks Gabrielle

There is not a whole lot of history to see as a tourist.
I took a trip to San Sebastian del Oeste last year - it is an old m ining town in the mountains. PV as such is not really a historical town, as its development is rather recent.
Le Kliff - it is a wonderful place, but WAY down the coast. If you do not have a car, it is pricey to get to, and very expensive foodwise as well.

GabrielleRCI--Thank you for the kind words, but I'm far from a legend. There might be some people on TUG who might be considered legends (Fern comes to mind), but I'm not one of them. Thank you, though. Anyway, I have a little travel tip that might be something you do or do not know. I just plugged in some dates on Expedia and Orbitz to give you an idea of what I am talking about. Instead of booking a round-trip flight from, for example, Sydney, Australia, to Salt Lake City, PLUS another round-trip ticket from Salt Lake City to Puerto Vallarta, book a multi-city trip instead. If you booked JUST round-trip tickets, April 25-May 10 Sydney to Salt Lake City would cost $2665. AND May 2-May 9 Salt Lake City to Puerto Vallarta would cost $627according to Expedia. The grand total for one person would be $3292. Now for the multi-city---April 24 Sydney to Salt Lake City, May 2 Salt Lake City to Puerto Vallarta, and May 9 Puerto Vallarta to Sydney is $2422. according to Orbitz. You'd save $870. per person!!! By doing one multi-city instead of two round-trips, you'd be getting to see Salt Lake City AND Puerto Vallarta for less than just a round-trip ticket from Sidney to Salt lake City.

GabrielleRCI--Your concern about Villa del Palmar Flamingos being far from town is a valid one. The buses will take appx. 45-minutes to get from Flamingos to downtown. If you rent a car, the traffic, at times, can be horrendous, and parking downtown can, also at times, be problematic. How about spending one week in Nuevo Vallarta (Flamingos area) and then the following week closer to downtown Puerto Vallarta. If your friend belongs to RCI, she can reserve what's called an RCI Extra Vacation Week for you. She'd also have to buy an RCI guest certificate (I'm guessing $50.) for you to have your name on the RCI Extra Vacation Week reservation. You could reimburse her for whatever it costs her; she just, according to RCI rules, can't make any profit off the transaction. On RCI's site, I see the following availability for May 9-16 in RCI resorts closer to town: Club Regina @ The Marina is $432. for a studio; Mayan Palace @The Marina is $531. for a 1-bdrm; and Buganvilias very close to downtown is $459. for a studio. A person could rather easily walk from Buganvilias to downtown. If you have the vacation time available, one week at Nuevo Vallarta Flamingos and one week close to downtown Puerto Vallarta would make for a very nice trip. Since you are spending so much on airfare anyway, a second week in Puerto Vallarta could well be worth the extra appx. $500. Just a suggestion!

Favorite, favorite, (don't miss it!) restaurant is "Le Bistro" on the island, in the middle of P.V.town. We've been going to P.V. many years and it's still our favorite. Also, don't miss "Pipi's" for lots of crowded, noisy fun and good Mexican food. We like to go for late lunch and miss all the crowd. Portions are HUGE!
And if you go to Sayulits (I highly recommend it!) go to "Rollie's" for a wonderful breakfast.
We haven't eaten dinner there but it's probably great, too. He might not be open tho. I think he spends part of the summers back in the states. Maybe someone else keeps it open for him when he's gone tho.

Gorgeous Place

We did a T/S tour of VPF this past April - an absolutely gorgeous resort. If you can stand to stay a whole week there, just soaking up the sun, playing, and relaxing, and then do the second week at the Bouganvelias as mentioned above, then you would never need a car. Relax one week, be tourists the next....
