Anyone familiar with this area? My daughter is doing a clinical rotation at River Regional Hospital and leaves in 1 week. She does not know anything. She is going to try and get to New Orleans for a weekend and was hoping for Nashville, but we just figured out that Nashville is a big distance.

memphis is closer than nashville

I would avoid tunica completely.

I'm about 90 miles from there now...my family is in McComb MS. Vicksburg is a pretty place with rolling hills and lots of history. New Orleans is about 4 hrs, she should check out Natchez...not sure how long that is but it's closer than New Orleans. She should visit Oxford, MS - home of William Faulkner, John Grisham, and the Ole Miss Rebels.

What else do you want to know?

I've always thought that exploring the Natchez Trace Parkway would be really cool. It's 444 miles long, and it's all National Park:

Worth checking out. Like the Blue Ridge Parkway up here, there's lots of places to stop, explore, camp, etc....

Mississippi

We lived in Jackson, Mississippi for a few years and enjoyed riding the Natchez trace to visit Natchez. We'd visit Vicksburg for the casino ships.

The area is a good one for estate auctions and we bought some beautiful furniture and accessories while living there. Memphis and New Orleans are close for weekend adventures.

If she gets over to Jackson, have her try the catfish at Cock of the Walk on the Ross Barnett Reservoir. It's the best I've ever had!

The story of two excellent mystery novels by Greg Iles take place in Natchez, Mississippi.

If you like Pat Conroy and read South of Broad - Greg Iles is to Natchez what Pat Conroy is to Charleston.

The two titles are: The Quiet Game and Turning Angel.

Highly recommend both.
