Verizon is About to Completely Change the Way You Pay for Your Phone Plan - by Ben Gilbert/ Tech Insider/ Tech News/ Business Insider/ businessinsider.com

"Verizon Wireless is dramatically changing the way its wireless plans work.

In plans announced Friday, the company put an end to new contracts, and will instead have you pay month to month..."

Thanks for sharing this article. We use Verizon and hadn't heard about this yet.

Ditto for me. We're Verizon customers too and I wasn't aware of this until I read the article.

I saw something on the internet yesterday. In looking at this article it looks like rate may go up if you currently have a family plan. We do, so at this point since we just got new devices and a new two year contract, I probably won't make any changes.

I have 2 throw away phone plus my Verizon contract phone. Need I say, I have looked at dumping the Verizon phone ... I am out of contract and will take them up on this ... to get rid of the $70 "reduced" rate contract.

But I will first have to call via my Ooma phone line to see what the REAL DEAL is with Verizon ... I have been more than disappointed with Verizon's addon fees over the years.

Basically the same thing T-Mo has been doing for a few years now.

I have 3 iPhones & and iPad with Verizon. Our contract is up in November. We have terrible service at home....calls drop like crazy. I was probably going to switch in November anyway, but with this new announcement it's even more likely! I've been so frustrated with Verizon!

This could actually benefit me with 4 lines. Save me about 60 bucks per month. Problem I have is one line is a grandfathered unlimited data and permanent 8.00 dollar line discount. That's my son's phone and he is a HUGE data hog because of it. If we shared data there would be none left for the rest of us. We have always found a work around to preserve his line. I may need to parachute him. LOL!

We switched from our Verizon plan after years, switched to straight talk and couldn't be more pleased :)

Verizon Made a Brilliant Move By Killing Contracts , But You Still Won't Be Perfectly Happy With It - by Antonio Villas-Boas, Tech Insider/ BusinessInsider.com

"Verizon announced a massive reorganization of its services on Friday.

The carrier is ditching its service contracts, which means that customers won't be able to buy discounted smartphones with two-year agreements. Instead, you pay for your service month to month and pay your phone off in monthly installments.

It's radical for Verizon, but nothing new in the industry..."

We Recently Said Goodbye Verizon Wireless & Hello T-Mobile.

We're just an extra line on our son's & daughter-in-law's cell phone account.

Their old Verizon Wireless plan provided 10-gb of data per month, for all 3 phones on the account.

For about the same cost, the new T-Mobile plan provides 10-gb per phone every month, with a rollover provision when a month's data use is less than 10-gb.

So far, so good.

ATT changed the way they were handling phone upgrades awhile back. I guess my question is, how will this ultimately effect the cell phone manufacturers? I know I won't be upgrading every two years anymore! $600++ is a lot of money for something I rarely use anyway!

In reality it won't cost you anymore because you paid for the discounted phone with higher rates. The cost of the subsidy was built in to your monthly fees.

I would like to believe this John but, I haven't seen any drop in my rates. So, if your theory is correct, I'm still paying for something I no longer have!

Yup

That's what drove the 2 year cycle. No point not upgrading as you gave them free money.

Yo make this happen you need to sign a new contract.
