Vancouver:. Is it better if you have one day to take tour of Victoria or do it on your own

There are four of us next June flying in in evening. Have one full day. Should we rent a car and drive over there and spend all the time we want it join a tour that handles everything but maybe not see as much as we want
How is driving parking car rental etc

You can't really just drive over. There is an hour and a half ferry ride and about an hour and a half commuting between both cities and their respective terminals. So count on, at least, 6 additional hours round trip just in the car.

We did the driving trip with a rental car several years ago when I visited there with a group of friends. By the time we made the drive and ferry ride our time on Victoria was fairly limited. We spent lots of time at Butchart Gardens then walked through the Fairmont Empress, ate a relaxing late lunch at a restaurant on the water and then headed back. We enjoyed the day, and had a rental car already because we were staying in Vancouver for a week. Depending on what the tour includes, I would think it would be a fine way to see Victoria and save you the hassle of getting a car for just one day.

Personnally, I would suggest that you spend more time in Victoria. As others have said, there is a 95 minute ferry ride each way (you can preschedule a time on the ferry) but there is so much to see in Victoria. Victoria is on the southern tip of Vancouver Island but Vancouver is on the mainland. I grew up with views of Vancouver Island but on the USA side of the border. We would go to Victoria often. I enjoy Victoria much more than Vancouver.

I think both destinations are kind of stand alone. There are so many things to do in both places.

If you do go to Victoria for one day you might consider Uber to Taswassen and taking the early ferry to Swartz Bay. You can catch a shuttle or Uber at Swartz Bay to Victoria. For one day, you could wander Victoria using the hop on bus.

I appreciate all suggestions. One of our group has made some decisions without knowledge of the area or talking it over. I have no idea where the port is for Alaskan cruise
How far apart is the ferry from the port

You are departing and returning to Vancouver? I suspect the cruise doesn't stop in Victoria?

In answer to the question in the title, Victoria is very small. I wouldn't personally do a tour. I would prep in advance to know what I wanted to see and do (and eat), and do it on our own.

Have you looked into a Float Plane? My former DIL flew from Seattle to Victoria for a day trip.
This is the correct answer. Fly from Vancouver to the Victoria Harbor on a float plane. Or you can fly from SeaTac to the Victoria airport. Don't waste time renting a car and driving over there.

If you're taking the ferry from Taswassen it arrives north of Victoria about 30 minutes. There is also the ferry from the Olympic peninsula that lands very close to the Empress in the inner harbour and the cruise ships are maybe a 15 - 30 minute walk from there. I don't think that ferries to Alaska start in Victoria but maybe I'm wrong. I know a lot more about timeshares than cruises. Both Vancover and Victoria are worth spending time in, going to either one for just a day trip is kind of like a European tour where if it's Monday I must be in France. Just my opinion.

No cruise goes to juneau To Seward
Where does it start and end? If neither are Vancouver and it doesn't go to Victoria, then I certainly wouldn't try to go to Victoria from Vancouver on a port stop. Now if it starts or ends in Vancouver, then you may be able to make the trek before or after your cruise.

Seattle cruises have to stop in Victoria, some obscure reason called the Jones Act, must stop in one foreign port. It's usually a short 6 hour stop the evening before returning to Seattle. Vancouver cruises don't have that restriction.

We've done the stop with the Butchart Gardens night visit, kind of magical walking around with all the landscape lights on the paths.

I omitted a comma. The cruise starts in Vancouver and goes to Seward.
I see the idea the idea of a day trip is not too smart. She also wants high tea on that day.

Although I wouldn't choose to do it, a day trip to Victoria is absolutely doable from Vancouver. I agree with those who've suggested the float plane idea as it's really very quick and easy. Harbour Air is what you'd be looking to book. You can hop a 35 min flight from downtown Vancouver to downtown Victoria, and Victoria is about as walkable as it gets. With a group of 4 this will be pretty expensive (maybe $1500 CDN round trip?), but it's a neat experience.

Doing a day trip driving onto the ferry has some advantages and is also doable, but it would make for a long day as others have stated. I do a similar day trip frequently as I live in the Gulf Islands. You would be driving against the flow of traffic, which sounds great in theory, except there's a counterflow lane setup in the Massey Tunnel which is an absolute disaster on the weekdays. Because of this you'd want to catch either the 5am or the 7am ferry to Victoria in order to avoid traffic. There is a great scenic drive from the Swartz Bay Victoria Ferry Terminal to downtown Victoria if you leave the highway and hug the coastline. The ferry trip would only be around $300 plus whatever your car rental expenses would be.

If you're flying in to YVR in the evening, you could consider renting a car and staying in Tsawwassen rather than downtown Vancouver for that night. There is a nice Coast Hotel that's 10 minutes away from the ferry terminal with no traffic worries.

If you want to continue on after exploring Victoria, you could drive the Malahat Highway to Nanaimo and take the ferry back to West Vancouver. On a weekday, you probably wouldn't want to be arriving back anytime from 3:30pm to 6:00pm (both the Massey Tunnel and the Lions Gate Bridge will be tough).

When I see what it take to get to burkhart gardens from Vancouver, and we reach vancouver on the evening before, I think it is too much for me. Seriously considering cancelling the Alaskan trip. I think this is just day one of my traveling companions wanting to do trips I cannot handle physically

My late Aunt used to live in Victoria. So I have been to visit Vancouver Island. I have also been to Vancouver about 4 times. I would suggest the whole area both VI and Vancouver area mainland are both destinations worth visiting on their own. 1 day is hardly enough to visit both.
