Have a large group going. Thinking it would be easier to just rent a van for the group.
Anyone have an experience with any vendors vs just trying to guess from google.

I think multiple vans would be easier to manage. 12 people plus luggage is going to come very close to having to use a 16 passenger bus. Those require the driver to have a CDL with a bus endorsement. I'm not sure such vehicles are even available at regular car rental agencies. Then there's the detail of everyone willingly going the same places on the same schedule as the majority. A group of this size will move at the pace of the slowest person in the group.

Far easier (imo) to have 2- 3 row SUVs or vans. Parking is also a consideration. SUVs fit in 'normal' parking spaces. 16 pax buses don't.

I haven't any experience with the large vans but I know people that rented a couple of the large 15 passenger vans to haul people from Waikiki to Lanikai Beach for a wedding. So they are available.

I have driven in Oahu more than a few times and a large vehicle like a 15 passenger van would not fit into the condo building parking area. You might need to park outdoors.

If I had to go to Hawaii with 12 people - I wouldn’t go!

Check out Roberts Hawaii Transportation. They have been in business for over 50 years in Oahu.

We just got back from a family reunion in Waikiki Beach with about 25 in attendance. We had a great time because everyone arranged their own hotel stays and we just met up each day for hiking, sight seeing, eating, etc. We all reserved our Luau dinner in advance at the same location.

Sounds like fun times. I love our family reunions.

I second this. Reality is that not all 12 people will want to do all of the same activities. Having two vehicles will make it easier for people to separate and do the activities that they enjoy or are capable of, while rendezvousing in the evening to do things together. For example, in a group of 12 people it is likely that there will be some people who will want to do more physically strenuous activities than others are interested in or capable of.

And, as Jim pointed out, parking is a significant consideration.

If you book through Discount Hawaii Car Rentals, you likely will be able to get reservations that allow two extra drivers for each vehicle. So, if you have two vehicles, with three drivers per vehicle, that means that half of your group will be able to operate a vehicle. That will give you tremendous flexibility to customize vehicle usage in relation to differing group interests.

Sounds like a bunch of old farts like myself complaining about youngsters wasting their money on cell phones, Taylor Swift concert tickets, and avocado toast.

I might be getting old because I never heard of avocado toast.

It depends on the itinerary and the group, imo. If everyone is going to the same place, one van would be perfect in that you know where everyone is, you only pay one rental fee and only need one parking spot.

I don't know, even when we travel with just another couple we usually get separate cars.. just so we can each go off and do different things. But your right that different groups have different dynamics.

Same here. I like to be the driver so I always get a car. It occurs to me that a group could use Uber in Oahu. We did when we went snorkeling at H Bay because we were told the parking lot fills up by 10am and our reservation to enter the bay was at 11:30.

This is years ago but all we needed was a regular minivan. Hertz on the Big Island didn’t have one at the moment so they tried to give us a 16 passenger van.

We waited Half an hour for a regular minivan to come in. My husband joked we should’ve gotten a 16 passenger van and made some extra money shuttling people around the island.
