I started thinking tonight about the lamp on the nightstand or light on the wall above it. I expect one of those at every hotel I stay, and yet I've never afforded myself that simple luxury at home. Nope, I got to get out of bed to turn off the light. I am going to change that!!!

Any other vacation inspired home improvement ideas?

A beach. I water and water the lawn, but try as I may, I just can't get one to work here. :)

Oh, seriously. I vow to never let my knives get into the same condition as those I invariably find in TS kitchens.

Wall mounted hair blow dryer in the bathroom. It took years of fumbling, winding cords and stowing the hand held to finally wake up and buy one of the wall mount type for each of our bathrooms.

@Jim - I'd like a beach too, or AT LEAST a pool! I'd also love the daily maid service and maintenance in five minutes with one phone call.

Oh well....reality.....

We did the wall mounted hair dryers years ago. When we redid the kitchen and dining room I sketched the passthrough for the kitchen designer....didn't realize till we went back on vacation to our usual place the next year that that's where the idea came from.

Blankets sandwiched between sheets (or sew the sheets together as a duvet), instead of a heavy bedspread that gets tossed on the floor.

Thick yummy terrycloth robe.

For years we considered a foam mattress like the one at our TS; never followed through, and they switched from foam to harder innerspring.

Blankets sandwiched between sheets - I like it! I will do that. :)

I've read other posts where people buy the heavenly bed. I am not in the market for a new mattress because mine are almost new. I would like to find a source to buy some furniture that reminds me of a Marriott, four seasons or westin. I want to buy new, not resale. I will start with chairs. I don't own any barstools or bathroom vanity chairs. Anyone know where I can buy a nice one 'as seen on vacation'.

I designed my bedroom loosly based on the rooms at Disney's Polynesian hotel. I found the sconces they used there on ebay from a company called Mouse Surplus. They are the kind that are hardwired into the wall. I bought a board which was supposed to be a shelf that was the same width as a queen sized bed, and covered it with Lauhala find weave wall matting, and attached the two sconces to it. I found a disk at home depot that attaches to an outlet and pluged the sconese into it (used appliance cord), so when I tap the disk the lights turn on, low, med, high & off. I attached bamboo around the headboard, that I bought at a craft store. It's not as big as the disney headboards but really has the same feel. I also replaced the generic white celing fan with a more tropical outdoor style one.

You can get a variety of wall mounted lights at most home improvement stores. If you get 'hard wired' ones, and don't want to hire an electrician, you can get 'wire molds', basically a tube the color/finish of the lamp that hides the cord down the wall to behind your nightstand where you can route the wire to a handy outlet.

I like the wall-mounted lights better than bedside table lamps because they don't interfere with my normal bedside clutter- magazines, Kindle, glass of water, glasses, etc.

Wall mounted make up mirrors that swing out from the wall, and then fold back flat.

I love furniture. My favorite store that is widespread is Haverty's. Many of their salespeople are trained design professionals and will be able to help you achieve the look that you want.

Here are a few of the time-sharish items that I like:

Club chair
Sofa
Barstools

Enjoy!

After reading this thread I might put a pool and tiki bar in the backyard, oh wait it's the "maintained" pool and "well stocked" tiki bar that I like on vacation.

Be careful - if you make home too much like vacation you may not want to go - and you may end up the vacation spot for all your friends and family.

I've always said if I could figure out what it is that makes me relax as soon as I walk into any of the older units at Welk I would pay to change my house to have it the same way. We have never figured out what makes that happen for me though we have read of others feeling the same way.

Cute thread idea.

I remember my wife's reaction to staying at Pebble Beach ... she ignored the views and took pictures of how they did the room (which got incorporated into our master bedroom ) -- a bit surprised a few years after to hear they tore down and re-build ... such a nice room. Meanwhile I barely remember the room --I was fixated on the 18th hole outside.

Recently we adopted two dog's .... the Four Seasons Aviara has done a major update and the dog lamps in the studio were my wife's favourite ... so I tracked down the Hotel Furniture liquidator and ... proud owner of a few things that remind us of the 'old' unit at Aviara.
