Using points to go to Hawaii

Hi all, I am thinking of buying a timeshare at Kings Land or Ocean Tower. But I also know I’m going to want to visit many other hawaii resorts in other islands. So, are you able to actually use your points to go to a hawaii resort that is not your home resort? Or even if it is your home resort, a smaller room? Are you able to actually find ample availability to book at a variety of hawaii resorts?

Big Island never had problems. Lagoon is harder especially high season 2 bedroom - we own there to ensure availability. Other HHV not so bad, but many more points. Maui is very tough right now.

Unless there is a specific resort that you always want to stay at and at a certain time then it may be better to just buy an inexpensive resale that has lower MFs. Hawaii resorts tend to have higher MFs. If you plan out far enough, most are available if you have enough points and time to be flexible. A quick glance for next spring break and every Big Island resort has availability, Maui has nothing but two days here and there, and everything on Oahu..that is bookable (some of them are bHC so this is too far out to book those but they show availability at the moment). Just remember points are points so you can buy points anywhere and use them anywhere.

What @letsgobobby said. I would add that Lagoon can make sense to own if you are able to plan 12 months in advance to stay a Saturday to Saturday week - particularly if you want to stay during certain high demand weeks.

The standard 2BR at Lagoon are sold out during our spring break. 1BR and 2BR premium units are still available. Prior to the pandemic even these were often not available especially for a full week. I think Asian tourism is still down to Hawaii, and overall HHV availability has been better than it used to be.

It was just in the news again here yesterday that Asian Tourism is still way way down.
