I have reservations to use my HHonors Reward Certificate at a Hilton Garden Inn in Washington, DC. This will be my first time redeeming my points. Do I have to pay the taxes on the room or is that covered? Also, by being a HGVC Silver member are there any perks I should be aware of? I've read that breakfast is included at most Hiltons for Gold members. Is this true for Silver members as well?

Thanks in advance!

I've never had to pay anything when I've used a rewards certificate.

Have fun!

One advantage of the HHonors system over any other is that you will get credit on your award nights towards your HHonors status qualification or re-qualification (Silver/Gold/Diamond). So if your award is for 2 nights, you will get 2 nights towards the required nights and 1 stay towards the required stays. It is definately worth getting at least Gold as you will get the breakfast benefit at most locations (though not at HGVC).

Last year I had so many nights and stays in my account that I didn't notice it. But we just had a free stay and it was indeed included in my total stay/night talley. That was a nice surprise as it got me to silver status for this year.

It also depends where you stay as to whether you get breakfast. Last year I was Diamond level and we stayed at a Hilton in Ediburgh and one at Heathrow, both on rewards points, and we got no extra courtesy or upgrades.
