Use this year's points for next year stay?

I know this is probably a stupid question ... but ... we're new HGVC RESALE owners (thanks to TUG!!) and I'm playing around with the online system and trying to understand it all. Still not able to access RCI or Affiliated Club reservations (hopefully that will happen soon).

My question is: Can I use 2012 points for a 2013 stay?

I know I can only book 9 months in advance for a Club Reservation, but lets say in June 2012 I am able to make a reservation for March 2013 (9 months later). And lets say it requires 7000 points.

Will they pull my 5000 available points from 2012 and then the balance of 2000 points from 2013? Or do I have to first "rescue" / roll-over those 2012 points into 2013 in order to use 2012 points toward a 2013 reservation?

Thanks in advance....
Cindy

Yes, you can borrow any number of next year's points for use this year. There is no charge to do so.

I have done this. If you want to use this years points next year you must "rescue" them first. If you just book for next year they will take the points from next year.

Actually, we'd be borrowing from THIS year's point to use for NEXT year. Still okay?

OK, I understand. Great question. From what I can tell reading the Member Guide, if you want to use this year's points in 2013 you must RESCUE the 2012 points for use in 2013. You can rescue 2012 points at anytime during this calendar year (you don't have to wait until December 31st).

Waiting until 12/31 or even the last week of December is actually a bad idea, as rescue demand-surge overtaxes HGVC's computers and call-center to the point that both are very difficult to access.

Here's a tidbit:
For RCI bookings, you can use 2012 points to book a 2013 stay without a rescue.
The system draws on your current-year points first, and then your 2013 points.

If in 2013, you cancel an RCI booking which used 2012 points, you have an option:
You can deposit the 2012 points to the RCI program (for a fee) or allow them to lapse.
I recently had to educate a CSR about this option.

Agreed on not waiting until end of year to rescue your points. HGVC computers will go down in Dec.

If you believe there is a reasonable chance you will need 2012 points in 2013, rescue them now. And then if your 2013 plans change and you book something in 2012 anyway, the rescued points pushed into 2013 will be used first.

You need to take more vacations and get ahead of the curve instead of behind.

Get to a place where you use future years in the current year. In other words, use your points before you pay the mf for them instead of the other way around.

This was the best tip TUG taught me.

Thanks, everyone. We just did a big 2-week Hawaii Vacation in Dec 2011, and we have our 25th wedding anniversary in 2013 - we'll probably go somewhere for another two weeks so I thought I'd save up/use my 2012 & 2013 weeks for that trip. Looks like I'm going to have to "rescue" the 2012 points unless we use RCI. Thanks again for the info! I'm slowly starting to understand how HGVC works. Still waiting for RCI and Affiliate options to show up on the HGVC website....

For affiliates, you're not gonna see anything new. Most affiliates are not available online, only a few of the larger ones that HGVC manages, like Bay Club. The classic reservation system shows others for open season, but they're not reservable online.

So we're not able to book Club Intrawest affiliated resorts online?

Correct. CI's & HGVC's booking systems are not linked.
Of the Grand Pacific Resorts, you'll only see the ones in Carlsbad.
Perhaps one day, they'll add more as an "enhancement."

Its only in the last few years that we could book RCI online.
