Calling the border with the United States a clear point of "vulnerability" for Canada in terms of Covid-19 infections, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Tuesday that by mutual agreement, the border will remain closed to nonessential travel until at least June 21.
Trudeau did not rule out a further extension of the border closure. The US-Canada border has been closed since March 21.

Canadian Provincial and Federal leaders are in agreement on this ; as are most Canadians .

Hot spots are generally outside Canada . Testing worldwide , and in Canada is not yet at the level to prevent super spreaders from causing new infection clusters .

Canadians consider themselves “owners” of our provincial healthcare systems -because they are paid for from our personal tax payments . This is analogous to paying a MF for points and considering yourself a owner in a Timeshare System .

No one wishes to expose our provincial hospital and healthcare systems to
the risks of renewed exponential spread of Covid 19 .

Just my opinion. But in Ontario, all malls are closed...shopping...you line up to get into the shops stores that are open. Restaurants, bars remain closed. All entertainment venues closed...so other that separating family members who else would be crossing the boarder that is not already? Seems to me tourism is dead in Ontario. Whats open in Michigan and NY..don't really know but with a $1.42 Canadian dollar who can really afford crossing into the USA? Not shoppers, not tourists.

The concept..closed boarders might make you feel good, action is happening...but seems to be redundant. And if the concept of isolating hot helps so much, for example, why not fence in Toronto or Montreal?

Canada does not want Americans to come north and spread the infection. Summer is prime season for that.

many malls may as well stay closed - and wait while more chains file for reorganization .

internal tourism within Ontario will have a tough summer - but there is always the future ;when
“drive to tourism “:will exceed “fly to tourism” for some time ; just as it did after Sept 11th.

The border closure was likely initiated by the other partner ; it’s just that almost no one in Canada is complaining that it remains closed to non essential travel .

Traffic in and out of Pearson (YYZ) Toronto like all airports is down considerably, but there are still quite a number of flights coming and going daily. Some would be cargo, but not all....is there that much 'essential' travel and would we be surprised to learn how many people are actually travelling for what ever reason these days?

The number of flights is obviously a fraction of the pre-Covid volume. Without going online to review flight statistics, I can also confirm that fact anecdotally, since our house is near one of the western flight paths for the main east-west runways at Toronto Pearson. We usually hear planes overhead on a regular basis. The last time I can remember actually hearing aircraft overhead was on May 10th, when the Snowbirds flew over on their way to Hamilton and points west.

So there is definitely a significant reduction. Even Pearson reported significant drops in volumes as early as the end of the first quarter 2020, compared to 2019. When the second quarter results come out, the real impact will be clearer.

Pearson (YYZ) is the largest air hub in the country and one of the biggest on the continent, so yes, there will still be a significant volume of flights. Most people don't realize the large volume of cargo flights, including express mail, whether for Canada Post, UPS or FedEx. Domestic travel is certainly way down, with some routes shut down, but there are still regular flights to major cities. The same applies to US and international flights. I understand some of those must be maintained on at least a minimal level in order to retain the landing rights in the other country.

None of that means that these flights are full. Some may be mostly empty, but there are still flights. Also, Pearson is one of only four airports in Canada authorized under the emergency regulations to actually accept non-US international flights. So some flights that might have landed elsewhere before are now landing at Pearson.

Actually, what I understand from my "sources" is that the "other partner" was the one pushing for re-opening the border. It was instead our government, with the strong urging of the Premiers of BC, Ontario and Quebec, that held firm and indicated it had no desire to reopen the border at this time to non-essential travel.
