Does anyone know if US citizens have to purchase a document entitled "eTA - Electronic Travel Authorization" to fly out of Canada arriving in Cancun and then returning to Canada to eventually go home to USA?
Although it was a few years ago, I did not need such documentation then.
Thank you for your help.
No, you do not need an eTA. You will only need your valid US passport.
Under our reciprocal agreement, US citizens do not require an eTA to fly to Canada. Similarly, Canadian citizens do not require an ESTA when flying to the USA. An eTA or ESTA is only required by citizens of other visa waiver countries that do not require a formal visa for entry, such as the UK, France or Australia.
An eTA, like an ESTA, is not a visa. It is only a travel authorization to board an aircraft to fly
TO the country. Neither country has formal exit controls, so no document is required when flying
OUT of either country. For citizens of any country that require a formal visa, they must apply for a full visa in advance of flying. An eTA or ESTA is not used in those cases.
