We currently have a cat 7 travel package. Can I upgrade the cat 7 hotel to a cat 8 hotel? There's more choices. If so what is the charge for doing so?

Thanks.

Yep, just call and they'll upgrade you. The charge is just the extra points needed between the cat 7 and 8 package.

Upgrading is nice feature of the program. We booked a 5 night package at a Cat. 1-5 since we weren't sure what we would actually need ( we are using the airline miles first) and will upgrade the Cat. if we need to.

Enjoy your trip.

Can also downgrade to a lower Cat. and get the difference in points back. These changes can easily be made with one phone call.

You can, and should, book the actual hotel stay with points before you have enough points. You don't want the room to no longer be available with points when you finally get enough points. Once you have the reservation, you can then save up for the points. Once you get enough, call and upgrade the certificate and attach it to the points reservation.

Another question, about upgrading a rewards cert.

Can I upgrade our cat 7 to a cat 8 or 9 using cash instead of using reward points?

Yes in a way

You can do this by buying the required points needed to upgrade.

I thought Marriott was going to add the option to use points and cash but have never seen this option. I think I might have rea about this a couple of years ago.

Hilton clearly gives the option to use part points and part cash when booking.

The option is available now. You will see Cash + Points when you select award stays. If a stay is normally 20k points, it might be 10k points plus $50.00.

However, I am not sure you can combine a travel package cert and cash. The travel package is for a specific category so wouldn't really apply in that scenario. (except for upgraded rooms in same category)

Your solution is best.

Thanks for the info on this. I'm working my plan on building up MR points in order to turn over Jan 2017 and get 120,000 Southwest points and a 2 year companion pass right away.

1-5 needs 270,000 which I know I will hit. But, I really wasn't looking forward to trying and find a 1-5 that I would want to stay in for the week!

Good to know I can upgrade for the cost of the points later on.

How long is the travel package cert good for?

They are good for a year, but they can be extended for at least another year by calling Marriott Rewards.
