Just got off the phone with MR, trying to upgrade the hotel part of my travel package. Going to Maui in March, had planned on staying at the Wailea for five nights before going to the MOC. The Marriott Wailea was full for the days I needed. It looked like my only choice for a Marriott was the Court yard or the Ritz Carlton. I wanted to upgrade from cat 8 to tier 4 for the Ritz. After getting the run around and transferred three times was told you could'nt upgrade from a cat to a tier, this did'nt sound right but I don't know. Guess I'm stuck at the Courtyard for five days. Any other suggestions?

I have had no problems upgrading the hotel part of a travel package from one cat to a higher cat.
I have not tried to ugrade from a cat to a tier.
Perhaps this is not possible, but I would be inclined to call again and hope to get an agent who will be able to help.

My experience also, but it sounds like OP has a 5 night travel package and the 5 night chart does not include the tiers. I think maybe you can't get a 5 night package with tiers, only with the regular hotel categories. This would make some sense because the 5 night packages were introduced to preserve a benefit at existing point levels that existed before with the only change being 5 nights instead of 7. Tiers did not exist at the time the 5 night option was introduced for MVCI owners.

Can one upgrade from a 5 night hotel certificate to the 7 night? I don't know if this is possible, if so, could one then upgrade from the 7 night category 8 to a tier 4 7 night?

Give a Marriott on a different island a try perhaps?

I don't know the answer to that. Neither answer would surprise me.

The Courtyard on Maui is actually very nice and is very well located for island sightseeing. Upcountry, Road to Hana, Haleakala are all much more convenient from there than from Kaanapali, Kapalua, Kihei or Wailea, not to mention the airport. But whatever you do, don't go to the Courtyard at Waikiki, which is very substandard (a purchased hotel with tiny rooms, so not like a regular Courtyard).

Everything Worked Out

Checked a few days later online and I saw vacancies at marriott Wailea. Picked up the phone and called MR to change reservation. Just to see if I would get the same answer I asked about upgrading from a cat 8 to a tier hotel. She said no, they are two separate systems that don't talk to each other. I did notice when I was on the MR web site and clicked on the Ritz it would take me to another site and I would have to sign in again. Anyway I'm happy can't wait for my trip to Maui to get here.
