United won't refund mother-in-law for first class Den-Lih one way ticket. She is 92 next month.

So they will only give her a travel credit/ voucher. They say it can be used by someone else, if she cannot travel.

Rick even talked to a supervisor. Unbelievable. I don't care for us, because we can use the travel voucher.

I don't remember the status of your trip. Were the flights cancelled? Were they changed by four hours or more? And unfortunately someone's age isn't going to make an airline change their policy.

Don't cancel until day before or of. If YOU cancel now, you are stuck with a certificate. If UNITED cancels the flight or changes the time dramatically which is more likely the day before the trip, they will be forced to issue a refund.

in fact, I'm looking at the United chart now and most June dates don't even have flights available. this means they plan to cancel flights, but don't do so until right before, because they hope that customers will cancel first and then they only have to give certificates

It is my understanding that their are no mainland to Lihue flights now. I don’t see how they can refuse you a refund when they are not able to deliver what you have purchased.

The flight was changed from a nonstop from Denver to a stop in SFO and is a total of five hours of schedule change, and we weren't arriving until after 8 PM, when we were originally arriving in the afternoon, not that we were going to go. United told Rick that a refund requires 6 hours or more of time change to cancel. They suck.

Mom is a nag, nag, nag, and she wanted to cancel. Rick just got off of the phone with Alaska, and they gave her a full refund for the return flight (no flight change at all on their part, so that was kind).

Our flights are through Chase Travel, we used points for the two of us. I am not cancelling until the day before. I learned that lesson the hard way. Helen is talking about going to Maui with us for a couple of weeks next February. We are going 4 weeks and 5 days to Maui, and she doesn't want to go that long, so maybe we will have her fly nonstop home on United and have our son pick her up at the gate at the Denver airport. She cannot do a stop at an airport by herself. She is completely incapable of getting to another gate and will not ask for help. She almost missed a flight at LAX because she fell asleep.

As my mother got older she got very anxious about flying. The last few trips she made were back and forth between my sister's home and ours. She had to have someone fly with her. However, when she was younger she, and my aunt, completely missed their flight from LAX to the Big Island. They were talking and somehow missed the announcement AND everyone boarding! How they did that I have no idea. They were put on a later flight, and made it, but I'm still shaking my head.

I would imagine that travel insurance for the 90+ crowd is a good idea.
