Two II Accounts - Should We Maintain Both?

We currently have two II accounts.

The primary one is derived from our Chairman’s level ownership of Marriott. We use it mostly for getaways now, as we tend to use all our enrolled points/weeks or bank the few unused points each year. A few years ago, we upgraded the account to platinum level, though I’m not sure we are getting our money’s worth on that. But that’s ok...I think we’re close enough. In two months, this membership will be due for renewal.

The second account was opened for us two years ago after we made a small purchase of an RTU resort group in MX. We haven’t used this account for anything (no deposits/exchanges or getaways), nor have we made any direct payments to maintain this account. However, this membership is due to expire soon.

Even though we are currently not using the MX account, and really have no plans to use it anytime soon, we are thinking we need to maintain it. We are at the point where we are contemplating getting rid of our Marriott ownership, possibly as soon as five years from now, but we would like to have access to II for getaways, which is where the MX account would come into play. We have no intention of using the MX account for exchanging at any time.

So, do we need to keep the MX account active for future use, or is it possible to let it lapse, then reactivate it when we need it, after divesting of our Marriott ownership?

And, given the current environment where travel is not possible and/or advisable, and it is unclear when it will be a viable option again, we are wondering if it’s worth it to renew our platinum membership. Any thoughts?

Your Marriott II account is included in your annual DC fee. So you pay nothing additional for it. Though you did upgrade it to Platinum, that is a voluntary upgrade. Only your Platinum membership will expire.

You can let the account associated with your MX ownership lapse and start it up again later. It sounds like it may just be an individual II account.

The only real reason to maintain the platinum membership is if you think you will get more value from it than the annual fee. You save $50 on each getaway and have free guest certificates and discounted upgrade fees. If those discounts are more than the membership fee (I think it is $129 for two years for Marriott owners), then keep it. If you won't get that value, let it lapse. You also don't have to renew right away if you don't plan to use it right away. Just be sure you don't renew too soon as they tend to back date the effective date to when it last expired.

I would cancel the account and save the money. You can use the corporate account for getaways until if or when you need the other account. You can use platinum with the corporate account. I have platinum, and it does save money for me at least. You should be able to reactivate the other account if or when the time comes.

So, it sounds like we should let the MX II account lapse. That’s great, saving a few dollars. But what do we have to do to reactivate the account? Would we just call and whatever the annual fees are at that time? Or do we have to provide some sort of documentation?

Just call them when ready. Heck I have the opposite problem. I still have an old II account that was like yours, and I cancelled it. Every time I log into II, it asks me which account, never mind one is active and the other not for like 7 years. I even asked the II rep on TIG to please please remove it. He said they can not, as I may want to use it later.

Others have said they have succeeded getting an old one removed, but I never could.

Same here. I have asked to have that old Pre DC account removed, but they say they can't do it.

Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences and knowledge. We'll be letting the MX II account lapse, and will likely hold off on renewing Platinum level on our DC account until after the virus situation has settled and we might actually be able to use it.
