"We have advised guests from both ships to enjoy their day ashore in Cozumel," Carnival said."

And understand, it's hard to stop those things "on a dime" so please, don't sue us. ;)

I feel port docking accidents for cruise ships have been on the rise for:doh: the past two (2) years.
I am going to name just a few cruise lines in the past eleven (11) months that have had port docking accidents Celebrity Cruise Line, Holland America, MCS, Royal Caribbean and Carnival.

It shouldn't be a big surprise. They are docking almost daily in smaller facilities, with ever larger cruise ships, and using just onboard thrusters to maneuver, rather than tugs. Given that, those crews do a great job, often in pre-dawn darkness.

I was booked via RCI to be on Cozumel this week...but I had to cancel. I hate the cruise industry and what they've done to spoil the reefs and ecosystems on Coz. They also steal all the water from people who live back on the "avenidas", who get their water turned back on ONLY after the ships leave port in the early evening. But yes, it's helped some locals make $, so the cruise ship invasion isn't all bad news. "El jefe" makes even more money...and ya gotta keep the boss happy or else!

I used to love Cozumel and bought my first timeshare there, on my honeymoon in the early 90s. But now it's ruined from so many stinking cruise ships...especially on Wednesdays. (Don't get me started on how many day-trippers crash the resort swimming pools!)

FWIW, I just hope Carnival cruise line reimburses Cruz Roja and other Mexican entities who came to the rescue of the injured cruisers!

My perspective on tourism impacts in Mexico (and other locations). Tourists come in and leave dollars. Those dollars spread into the local economy, through the tourism related industries. That makes it easier for many people to make an honest living, ranging from taxi drivers, hotel room maids, cooks and waiters in restaurants, tour guides, the people selling trinkets on the beaches, etc.

If gringos, and others, weren't dropping their money into the local economy, economic conditions would be more desperate for some, which would make illicit activities more attractive, or perhaps the only reasonable means of survival.

So, certainly bemoan the impacts of cruise ships and hypertourism. But when you do, be sure to consider what would happen in the alternative.

Passepartout you are correct in that captain of mega cruise ships are now totally in charge of their docking;
These captain are not using local tugs .

The impact of tourism and the American dollars in Mexico and in most Carribean Island countries is very important for their economy to survive.

May I also stated for the record the Impact of Tourism is also very important in the following cities in the United States: Orlando, Fl, New York City, Williamsburg, Va, Virginia Beach, Va. Charleston, SC, Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head Island, and Las Vegas, NV. This is just a small list of names of cities in our great country that depends on tourists and their dollars. Finally, everywhere on this earth without tourist and their dollars, local economy could not survive. IMO.

On Jan 2, 2020 their will be eight (8) cruise ships in Cozumel, Mexico with over 14,000 passengers plus crew members in this one port. What amount of tourists dollars will be left in Cozumel for just one day.

That's insane! Talk about killing the goose that lays the golden egg! Cozumel has to follow the lead of Venice and Glacier Bay and limit the number of ships/visitors allowed.

In my youth, I visited the islands by flying in* and stayed at resorts.
I resented cruisers who showed up in hordes and obscured the view.
... until my 40's when I became one myself.

Carnival Cruise Line gives possible cause of accident in Mexico, apologizes to guests.

I am sure the weather had everything to do with it. But with strong crosswind or current and maybe both of them acting together, the captain was set up to fail. There should be a decision making process to call in the tug boats when things get bad. Carnival keeps making the news for things that go wrong. I just wonder if their captains are forced to press on when other cruise lines use tugs.
