How horrible.

The old bridge and the current bridge side by side.

High, narrow bridges scare me silly. I refused to transit the old Skyway bridge.
I'd think of rickety old Overseas Highway to Key West built on narrow railroad bridges.

I've driven over the new bridge several times... (and taken a cruise under it).
It's still a little up there (don't look down), but a heck of a lot safer.

Do they still offer drivers to drive you over the bridge? Used to be a dollar or 2 to get a driver. That bridge scares the crap out of people!

No. The new one is 4 lanes (2 per side) with a concrete divided median.
Fraidy-cats can drive on the inside lanes. BTW, there's 6 suicide hotlines.

I'm not a huge fan of bridges -- but, when I do drive over them, I just keep my eyes laser focused on the road ahead and do not look around (else vertigo takes hold fairly quickly).

On high wind days and foggy days the new Skyway Is closed. (You can really feel the wind as you drive over it, even before they close It.). I love taking the skyway on a clear day, the water is beautiful and there are lots of birds...

I remember driving over the old Skyway in my VW bug and I hated it. I had to make sure I filled the car up with gas before crossing to make it heavy enough so that the wind updrafts in the grates at the top of the bridge wouldn't shift the car into the oncoming lane of traffic. Nothing separated you from oncoming traffic and the wind updrafts would happen suddenly! I don't miss the old bridge.
