Twilight vs Harry

Have any of you read this vampire series? I had never heard of it until news of the movie came out. DD is sooo excited. I asked her if she liked it as well as Harry Potter (she is a huge fan of Harry) and she said Twilight is even better. She read the last installment in one day. I guess I should read it before the movie comes out in theaters.

Loved the new Harry Potter trailer. I am really looking forward to seeing the movie. (Saw it on the internet and then again tonight at the movie theater before seeing the latest Mummy movie--which is okay but not as good as the first Mummy. It is a combination of Lost Horizons, Indiana Jones and a smidgen of King Kong.)

I read Twilight (just the first one). I thought it moved very slllllooowwwwlllyyy. The writing is okay but plodding. You know when they say "You won't be able to put it down!" Well, no problem putting it down, the problem was picking it back up again.

It's basically a tween/teen romance with a twist--the boy love interest is a vampire. The girl falls in love with the boy and wants him to turn her into a vampire, too. One of the characters introduced in the first book is a werewolf, and in the later books she has a romance with him, as well as with the vampire boy, so there's some question of who she will end up with. (The new book, Breaking Dawn, just resolved that.)

I'm not a big fan of romances, and I gather if you like them you will like the Twilight series better than I did. My middle DD read the first and second ones, to keep up with her school friends, and she thought they were pretty slow, too. She went to the local Borders Breaking Dawn party (the friends were going) and there were only 22 kids there...21 girls and a boy. No mothers, although I've heard that mothers love these books!

Now Harry Potter--to me they're completely on a different plane as far as writing, plotting, characterization, everything. They're really works of art.

Isn't there a television series with a similar plot called Moonlight?

I agree about HP--brilliant piece of work.

I don't know--I've heard of Moonlight but I've never seen it. I think maybe they're just vampires? Oh, wait. I just looked it up on IMDB. Here's the plot summary:

"A vampire lands work as a private investigator and falls for mortal woman."

I guess it's a grown-up vampire detective series with a romance angle.

The clever thing about Twilight, to me, is that vampires live in the Pacific Northwest because it's always DARK there, because it's always raining or about to rain.

I got hooked on the "Twilight" series by one of my students. Still have to read the final book....that just came out. I thought the first book was excellent....2nd book was much slower read.

Also love the HP books....but haven't seen all the movies.

The teens in the middle school where I work love the Twilight series. I haven't read any yet - guess I'll have to check them out.

I haven't found anything better than Harry Potter series - read the last book in 2 days - couldn't put it down. I was so sad that the series ended but loved that J.K. added an epilogue to tie things up.

Another great teen series is the Cornelia Funke trilogy. Inkheart is the first book, Inkspell is the second, and Inkdeath comes out in October. It's about a man who loves and fixes books and no longer reads aloud because he has the ability to read characters out of the stories (and others go in). Great stories.

Another good wizard series is a set of 4 books by Angie Sage. They are Queste, Flyte, Physik, & Magyk. Not quite as good as Harry Potter but very entertaining.

And my latest find is the Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz. I am in the middle of the last (of 7). Alex is a 14-yo British spy. The books are (in order) : Stormbreaker (movie was made, I haven't seen it yet), Point Blank, The Skeleton Key, Eagle Strike, Scorpia, Ark Angel, & Snakehead. I thought Stormbreaker, Scorpia, and Snakehead were the best. Terrific plots keep you constantly turning the pages to wonder what will happen next.

I just picked up Twilight for my 15 year-old, but she has sooooo much summer school work to do (THAT's a topic for another thread) that she won't get to it for a while, so I started to read it. I'm enjoying it--it's a nice summer fluff read--but so far it hasn't drawn me in like Harry Potter did almost from the first page. I think the key is that despite the setting and circumstances in HP, the characters were so real, so beautifully developed as to be easily identified with.

I've read the Twilight series except for the new one. I don't think there is much comparison with these and the HP books. They are both written for young adults and have a supernatural twist but that's about it.

I enjoy the Twilight books even though the main character is a bit melodramatic. Be prepared for some self-indulgent whining!
