I’m wondering if anybody has had a positive/negative experience using Turo peer-to-peer car rental? I prefer the less risky established car rental company but for my next Hawai’i trip the price is pretty comparable on a car that I’m actually considering buying (and can’t rent from a traditional rental company).

I’ve checked with my insurance and would be covered if I rent through Turo, so at least there’s that comfort.

In March I used Turo on Kauai and Maui. So pleased it was easy and convenient. On Kauai they have the own lot near Target. They have a bus pick you up at the airport and take you to your prearranged car spot with the keys in the cars lock box. On Maui the cars owners tells you where the car is located at the airport and the keys are in the car.

While there are some individual people who rent out on Turo, there are many who are local rental companies with dozens of cars.
I like being able to choose the exact car to rent, dings and all.
Go with the basic from Turo and use an annual excess insurance if you don't have cover another way. Insurance companies treat it as a rental as there's a rent agreement, unless specifically excluded.
I've had some terrible rental experiences via international chains, so no reason to believe Truro will be worse 😜

Yeah, like Airbnb and Vrbo, these things have morphed into programs where small, medium, and even big operators come in and take over a lot of the share. I watched a YouTube video once where someone claimed they had a fleet of 40 cars on Turo.

Personally I wouldn't rent through Turo. You have no back up if anything happens with the car.

We made Turo car reservations twice. The 1st time, we hand to cancel just 12 hours before we were scheduled to show up. No refund. Our loss. (So it goes.)

Next time, everything worked out great. We rented a minivan (so we could accommodate a bunch of kids) for 1 week at about 1/2 the quoted internet prices for comparable on-airport & off-site rental vehicles. E-Z Pass was included. We were billed later for highway tolls at actual cost.

The only down-side was needing to use Uber or Lyft to get from the airport to the Turo car pick-up point, & back again after returning the car.

Trying to get the Uber app to work at the airport was a nightmare. I gave up after 20 minutes of trying to went with the Lyft app, which was flawless & quick. (My trouble with the Uber app might be due to my own ineptness rather than anything wrong with Uber's app. Regardless, the Uber app wasn't working for me after much trying, but the Lyft worked 1st time & every time.)

Car return was super-early, so we arranged the night before for Lyft pick-up next morning. The Lyft driver showed up 2-3 minutes early & got us to the airport pronto.

On the basis of our Turo-Lyft experience, we'll consider going with them again next time.

I only used Turo once, picking up and dropping off from Salt Lake City airport. It worked out well. I think the provider was a business that had a fleet of cars on the platform.

We successfully used Turo on Kauai twice with good results, once in San Diego where we had to Uber to the pick up place, otherwise great.
I would use them again.
Note: Also tried the little Sixt rental on Kauai with good results, I hear some people are leary.

A family member use to use them a lot. Upon arrival at the airport, the owner texted saying the prior renter had not yet retuned car. He had to scramble for a rental. Doesn't use them anymore.

Yeah the lack of backup plan(s) that you get from a real rental company gives me pause. Maybe I’ll have to be that guy who makes a refundable reservation just in case.

I use Turo all the time and have had great experiences with them. Last time we arrived at Ft Lauderdale airport, the car owner pulled up at the arrivals curb and put our luggage into the car for us before we drove away (and he caught transportation to get to where he was going).
Have never had a problem.
