Help! I'm in Galveston County and will need to evacuate but have 2 cats. I'm a member of El Cid Vacations Club and the only places they could find for me wouldn't accept pets. Does anybody have anyplace in TX we could work out a rental, trade, whatever on????

Thanks!

Quite honestly, I would put the cats in a suitcase and sneak them in...this is a disaster you are talking about.

Or you could leave the cats at home....don't risk your life for a cat.

I have put my cat in a suitcase to sneak him into a hotel in one emergency...just give them a treat to eat for the quick trip from the car to the room, then keep them in the bathroom.

Thoughts are with you.

Even thought I am HIGHLY allergic to cats and would be very pissed if I checked into a no-pet hotel and got a room that recently had a cat in it....I start sneezing and red eyes pretty fast, I understand Hurricane emergencies and really appreciate it if the cat was confined to the bathroom (or tub) and was not able to roam around the room.

If it's like what happens here in Florida-everything would be booked by now.
I say-sneek the cats inside. All our places here lift the pet ban for evacuatees. Jan

+1. Also an idea for future evacuation emergencies...have your vet dispense to you tranquilizer(s) for pet(s)...in advance of any emergency. Just keep it in your emergency meds kit. This will make your evacuation in slow-moving traffic more bearable if the furry friend is

Never thought of sneaking them in in a suitcase.
joked about buying baby clothes and a stroller. :p
I think carrying in the litter pan might be a giveaway though.

I'm sorry. I don't have a trade to make with you, but I understand. I love my cats and would never leave them behind. Just get out of there and take your kitties with you. Stay safe.

Thank you all for your suggestions. We have decided to stay.... NOT because of the cats, they are not a deciding factor, if we left we would take them and just keep going until we found some place, or else sneak them in. The decision was made because our county officials have NOT called for our area to be evacuated. We don't understand it, while all the areas around us have been evacuated, but some of my neighbors have told us that this particular area does have a higher elevation, and it is the storm surge that is causing the greatest danger at this point.

We watched the house built last year (moved in on Sep 29 2007) and the county's building codes for hurricane strengthening were pretty amazing. I've been through hurricanes before, major hurricanes, so I do know their strength and unpredictability and my feelings are mixed between thinking we'll be okay, and being terrified. Maybe I need the tranquilizers!

I'll still take any prayers anybody has to offer, however!

Thanks.

No Evac order - This is surprising

I am familiar with where you live, I lived in Clear Lake for 3 years before moving to sunny South Florida. I think that soon where my former home stands will soon be called Muddy Lakes.

But all joking aside, please take care of yourself and make sure you have water, food, drugs (not just Valium), gasoline for cars, hopefully you also have a generator. We lived through the devastation of Andrew and then the much lesser storm of Wilma. Please also determine a "safe room" in your home should any of windows or roof fail. I do not know if they are currently building in Houston with concrete and steel re-bar - but I know my prior home in Clear Lake will more then likely blow away before it is flooded. But, Webster is not as low as Clear Lake and certain parts of Leauge City. Hopefully the storm will make a jog and not dump all that water in Galvston Bay.

Please keep yourself safe and it may be safer at this point to stay if they have told you that you are high enough. I would not want to out on I 45 at this point. Good luck and let us all know you are safe - you will almost for certain lose power for several days. Hopefully the storm will remain a Cat 2 and the winds will not be the major damaging factor. We will say a prayer for all in Houston tonight!

I love animals, but

Glad you didn't have to sneek your cats into the room, because many people have allergies that are not just inconvenient symptoms, but more serious like having difficulty breathing.

I don't own cats as I am VERY allergic to them.

I am also amazed to see how some people treat their pets without regards to others such as bringing dogs and cats to dinner with them, on an airplane next to me, to the mall, or a hotel (timeshare) room.

I only stated that during an emergency evacuation where there is no other option, people are going t break the rules for their flea bag pets and people like me will suffer and it would be nice if they confined those animals to a bathroom rather than get all their pet hair into the bedding, carpet, drapery, etc.

You have to kidding!

Ok,
I hope all of you are kidding, you would rather somebody DIE in a hurricane then the possibility of hotel room that would need a carpet cleaning and complete linen change.

My husband is also very allergic to cats, but we have pets and as a pet owner you must be a RESPONSIBLE pet owner. Leaving your pet behind for certain death is not responsible.

So, I guess if you guys are actually serious in your comments - you would skip Pink's funeral. Perhaps, somebody will send you the obit.

I do sincerely hope that you are kidding - this could have been a matter of living or dying. Given that choice, I would take my pets where I needed to and I would pay to have the room cleaned. My life and my pet's lives are worth the extra $200.00.

Hey - I can understand your concerns re allergies....but there is no need to be insulting.

No insult intended...I have simply had a few (negative) experiences while traveling as a result of an inconsiderate pet owner sneaking their animal into a hotel and even seated next to me on a plane (I actually had to move seats).

Not everyone is a dog/cat lover and owners need to respect our rights also. I am noticing that many people are bringing their dogs and cats out with them to coffee shops, dinners, malls, hotels, movie theaters, doctors appointments, and even hotel/timeshare rooms with them. Remember the days of inconsiderate smokers....that is how I feel towards inconsiderate pet owners.

Now in specific regards to a "True Emergency", I can understand bending the rules, but people still should not let their "pets" run amok in the rooms.

Bill,

Is this in the U.S.? I know people take their pets all over Europe, but I have never seen pets at Doctor's offices, office buildings etc. unless they are service animals. Are they allowed in the places you've seen them or do people sneak them in? (I guess I can't think of any of the places you've mentioned that would allow that at this time except for kenneled animals on a plane.)

I am certainly not questioning that you have seen this. I'm just curious.

We were given orders to evacuate as relative who lives in a nursing home. He is terrified of dogs so we had to leave out dogs behind. Our first night on the road was spent at a Comfort Inn. Numerous pets were accomodated at the hotel. Apparently, most Choice Hotels permit pets. The next time you have to travel with pets checkout www.choicehotels.com for a reservation. We are currently riding out the storm at a Homewood Suites by Hilton. This facility does not allow pets.
