Trouble booting up my computer

In the past month the computer does not automatically boot up. Instead I get this message: Master Hard disk: S.M.A.R.T. command failed. Press f1.

When I do that it works fine, but is there something wrong? Is there something I should do?

Thanks in advance. Joyce

SMART is an interface many disk manufacturers include that can collect and report on disk health and failure information.

You can look in the BIOS and see if there's an option to turn off the SMART check, assuming the message is coming from the BIOS.

Then you might consider backing up that entire disk and replacing it eventually, or at least find and run some sort of diagnostic on it. You can usually get one from the disk manufacturers web site.

I think I'm in over my head here. I don't know anything about BIOS or how to access it. Is it OK just to continue pressing f1 or should I bring it to a computer store? Thanks, Joyce

You can hit F1, but you really need to run some sort of diagnostic on the disk to see if it's getting errors or not. Do you have everything backed up and do you keep your backups current?
