There's a similar thread without a car. But when we're in Vegas we generally have a car (or know where to get one if there's somewhere we want to go).

I know about Death Valley and the Lone Pine area. What other day trips, adventures, etc. do you suggest?

Drive north on I-15 about 90 minutes and you're in St. George, Utah. Lots to see in that area. From there it's only a half hour or so to Zion National Park. Well worth the drive.

And if you go as far as Zion, you should spend the night and go see Bryce Canyon if you don't expect to be in that part of the country again any time soon. All of the sites mentioned are well worth the trip.

I wish we had gone to the Hoover Dam while we were there this summer, as we had our car and have never been. But I couldn't pry hubby away from the slots and I didn't want to go alone. But it's quite the thing to drive over, just a huge operation, and I think it would be interesting. Plus, I've always wanted to take a dam tour, a la National Lampoon's Family Vacation.

Also, Bryce Canyon, if you are going to venture that far north, is one of the most spectacular places we've ever been. I found it much more fascinating than the Grand Canyon. The Grand Canyon is, well, grand, it's big and awe inspiring. With the Bryce Canyon area, there's something new and beautiful to look at around every corner. But that would definitely be an overnight trip at least.

THose are my two votes.

We were in St. George UT this summer. We flew into Vegas, and drove to Hoover Dam the very first day. Short drive, and very spectacular ~ Don't miss it. As I said, we stayed in St. George, and visited The North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Zion & Bryce. All were fantastic, but as BevL pointed out, Bryce has my vote for the most scenic. :cheer:

It was good last 4th of July if you had a vantage point overlooking the whole valley (like across the street from Fern's house!) But, judging from the New Year's Eve fireworks, I don't know what to expect this year.

Rather than shoot the fireworks off the roofs of the casinos, they shot them off the parking garages or the ground and it wasn't that spectacular. They changed the locations where fireworks were allowed to be shot off after the fire at the Monte Carlo.

Also, for any of you who are NASCAR fans - Richard Petty runs a ride and drive school at the raceway north on Route 15!! We were there for the drag racing a few years ago and my husband did the ride along and had a ball!!

Take a drive to Mt. Charleston...especially if it's hot in Las Vegas, and not much snow getting there.
We enjoyed Valley of Fire, but don't forget to always carry plenty of water with you. Be sure to see Scotty's Castle in Death Valley. Take some hikes in DV.
The drive around Lake Mead was interesting too.
