Back when we started traveling to Europe, and shortly after what we knew then as Eastern Europe opened up to Westerners, we went with Grand Circle Travel www.gct.com/ They are professional, knowledgeable and as far as we could tell, reasonable, with local guides and forms of transportation. Often, Poland tours will combine with Prague, Vienna, Budapest in a whole Central Europe smorgasbord. Other tour companies I can recommend would be Grand European Travel and Gate 1 Travel.

What type of trip are you looking for and/or what is it that you want to see in Poland? Is it just a Warsaw and Krakow trip or is your desire to see other cities?

When I was there a few years ago it was probably one of the least expensive places to visit in the EU... I got a 5 course meal at the best steakhouse in Krakow for something like 20 usd.

There are some interesting sights to see in Poland, like Krakow Castle, and the Wieliczka salt mine, and an obligatory Chopin piano recital, some things have more individual interest than others. For instance, my DW couldn't be convinced to go to Auschwitz/Birkenau , and frankly, Warsaw is a 'new' city, rebuilt from paintings and photos after being leveled in WWII. There are many monuments, and WWII is still very fresh in the memories of the Poles.

All of the above can be accessed from tours in Krakow from your hotel if you want.

My wife and I visited Poland 1-2 years ago for about 1 week independently (not with a tour group). We flew into Warsaw (from Rome), and then returned to the US from Krakow. My "tour guide" was a Rick Steves travel book on Poland. We did, however, take a tour to visit Auschwitz.

Poland is civilized and the Poles are very refreshing, proud people with a strong national identity. (And no, I am not Polish.) We stayed at the Marriott Warsaw (very nice hotel) and then the Radisson in Krakow. We traveled between Warsaw and Krakow independently, by train. We felt quite safe walking through Warsaw and Krakow on our own.

Yes, there is a language barrier. But there is no problem with English at the major hotels and tourist sites. For example, at the Marriott Warsaw, the concierge was kind enough to write a note on a piece of paper (in Polish) that we simply handed to the clerk at the rail station to buy our rail tickets.

If you are brave enough to consider giving it a go as independent travelers, you are welcome to PM me and I'll dig out some tips from my old notes.

I visited Poland twice as an independent traveler 8 or more years ago. Came up from Budapest on the train and went on to Prague. First time, only went out to Auschwitz the first trip; 2nd year, got a room from a guy at 5AM asking if we needed a "room" as he would rent us a nice, clean room. Don't ask ... the idiot co-traveler whom he offered it, jumped on the deal ... I don't travel with him NO MORE.

It was centrally located, decent people, helpful, reasonable price ...just wish they had at least SOME HEAT in late November and a better/larger.newer single person elevator to the 6th floor (not the 95yo open wire cage).... enjoyed my stay in the city. Would go back ... but would look for a "real" guest house or "regular" room rental.

No need for guides or tour companies, the internet has replaced them.

My wife and I travelled to Warsaw several years ago and toured it without the need for a guide. There was no real issue with the language.

I then returned to Poland with a few friends a few years later and visited Krakow. We toured Auschwitz, simply take a bus from the main station in Town and it takes you direct, again no issues.

My wife and I are returning to Warsaw in December, this time with the kids in tow.

A good guide book and the wealth of advice and information on the internet should negate the need for an expensive guided tour.
