I'm considering getting trip insurance for our December Kauai trip.

I've never used trip insurance before.

Has anyone got a recommendation of a good firm?

After 40+ years of T/S ownership, I am no longer "an owner"
I generally don't buy trip/travel insurance but have twice in the past year given the extensive planning and upfront, non-refundable deposits/payments.

I used InsureMyTrip.com for quotes and found TravelGuard in both cases to be the best for my circumstances. Be sure to understand the risks in your specific case that you need insurance protection for.

I did have to file a small claim this past month on a delayed baggage issue and did get a check from them to cover my minimal out of pocket expenses for a change of clothes and some toiletries.

This site has all the insurance companies. You pick the type of coverage you need

If you're looking for medical insurance, you want a company that pays "primary" If it states secondary then the policy pays only after your "other insurance pays".

Plans also include trip cancellation, medical evacuation, etc etc...

And of course, making sure of what the rules are for pre-existing conditions. That's often a deal breaker for someone with a chronic type of health issue, in my experience in reading fine print.

Yes, and from my experience, there will also be exclusions this close to the date of travel as it relates to paid, nonrefundable deposits. (Generally you have to buy the policy within a very short timeframe of making your first deposit/payment on the trip.)

Is RCI insurance worth the $50+ ? Did it first time recently for a trip in 2013 to Florida. DH has health issues that could prevent us going.

See the Travel Insurance sticky at the top of the forum - we buy the Vacation Guard Timeshare Travel insurance. $99 a year covers all 7 of our timeshare weeks.

Different insurances cover different things. We primarily buy it for long, expensive trips- cruises, extended stays in Europe, Asia etc. We have private health insurance so that's not as much an issue as having parents- now just A parent 95 y.o.- who may require our presence on short notice. We want to make sure that we have repatriation and evacuation coverage. Trip and baggage loss and delay coverage gives some peace of mind, too.

We have bought both TravelGuard and AccessAmerica. Fortunately we've never had to file a claim.

We use CSA. As others have mentioned, you really have to read the fine print and call to get clarification if necessary (and get that conversation in writing or e-mail, too!). We found CSA to be better with the pre-existing condition clause. They also have a "cancel for any reason" policy, although that is more expensive then the standard one, of course. :)
