Treat ended up dangerous

Most of you know I have to eat gluten free or I get real sick. Yesterday I stopped by a well know Gluten Free bakery, a wonderful treat I thought.

Today I bite into it and I feel a hard object. It was a piece of glass to my horror. Just hope I didn’t swallow a small piece I didn’t feel. I don’t think I did.

The store is closed today. I left a message, texted and emailed with the picture so if they have it in their frozen case or if still selling they can pull so no one else can get hurt.

Mentally this freaked me.

Thank goodness, the owner got my messages and got back to me. I did what I could to make sure no one gets hurt if there is more glass. After receiving the following response, I told her to check her ingredients from the supplier, it could have also came from that.

Oh my goodness!!!
Seems impossible as I know of nothing that has broken or how that could be. This has never happened before in any way.
My utmost apologies and dearest thank you for letting me know! I will address this immediately and please let me know how I can make it up to you for my apologies.
You have credit at xxxxxxxx, please let me know when you are in so I can apologize in person.”

Is this something they made in their shop? Did they buy ingredients from a supplier, or put things together on their own? Hope nothing bad comes of this for you, and I hope they can figure out what happened. Stay safe!

They make it in their shop. Don’t know where they get their ingredients.

I am a pretty good chewer so I probably would have felt crunching smaller pieces of glass. If anything tiny particles are going throughout my digestive tract. Think about it, do we really know what is in the food we are eating? Makes me nauseous thinking about it.

I understand. The Navy did things so badly, it kind of ruined me for overthinking what I was eating. It got to the point where I'd look around me, and think, "Well, THEY'RE not getting sick..."

Your probably alright. Even if you did swallow a small piece, it should pass without a problem. I know a person who swallowed a needlepoint needle and it passed without incident.

Just monitor your movements for the next few days (think coffee grounds). Please relax, the human body has a great capacity to recover from small injuries.

As I recall from my days at a food company, most of the manufacturing lines use magnets and other detectors that easily find metal pieces, but it’s harder to find glass or plastic bits. Items like flour do go through a mesh screen system to sift out small particulates. Since this item doesn't use wheat flour, she may be sourcing the "substitute flour" she's using from smaller companies that don't have as sophisticated screening systems as some of the big companies. It would be easy for the baker to miss something like this if the ingredients being used were measured and combined in a larger mixer.

I realized that. That is why I didn’t mention the bakery. It has a wonderful reputation and logic tells me it was in the ingredient.

I'd say it is more likely it came from the bakery than mass produced ingredients. (Ie. Glass baking dish)

Food safety 101 is that you dont use glass in any food manufacturing and processing plant. USDA has strict rules including windows in the food processing area of the plant (often made of acrylic/plastic) - no glass allowed with few exceptions. Of course they could get their stuff from an unregulated supplier or it could have slipped through controls...

You won't see glass in any restaurant or bakery kitchen used for mixing bowls or baking vessels. Glass just can't hold up. Some ingredients may be stored in glass containers (food coloring, and most extracts). It could have been one of those situations where some glass shattered and it all didn't get cleaned off of the work surface. It looks too big to have just been in a bag of dry ingredients. My family has owned a restaurant for over 50 years, and I've never seen anything like that come in any dry ingredients. I've seen lots of dead bugs come in on vegetables, and some horrifying things on meat and fish (won't mention what), but nothing like that. My guess is that it was broken glass at the bakery. What it really looks like to me is the rim of a jelly jar that got broken off. That's happened to me at home more than once. Of course I just throw the whole jar away.

Seems like many businesses go on the defensive when they are made aware of issues such as yours. I commend this business for responding with a sincere apology and the offer of a credit at the store.

Many years ago my neighbor daughter was at her rehearsal dinner. She had a margarita and instead of ice, there were small shreds of glass in the drink. This started years of problems for the young woman, surgeries, pain, and the chain went out of business. I heard last year that she had passed away, a woman maybe in her fifties, but I don’t know if it was related

I have no idea how they happened or where they went (dishwasher?).
So I'd say its a glass container or serving dish.
