:hi:
I saw a program about a company with computers on treadmills - employees walk at 2mph while doing their work. They also walk in the conference room. The people interviewed had all lost weight and gained energy.

Sounds good, so now we're considering getting one (without the computer on top). We have a NordicTrac ski machine which I love when I use it, which is hardly ever. A treadmill might suffer the same fate, though DH said he would use it.

Walking is free, the dog would love it, etc - but we live in a very hilly area which is a problem for me because of knee and toe arthritis. Since the treadmill is an even surface and presumably softer, that may work.

A gym, swimming, the Y, etc are out because we live in the middle of nowhere and I'm not going to bother to drive.

So.....what do you think? Do you have a treadmill that you really use, or has it turned into a dust-catching sculpture?

My DH probably saw that same program :) . He set up his computer in front of the treadmill at home and loved it! He walked for 90 minutes a day and either worked at the computer, watched a movie on the computer, or listened to a book on tape.

Then his work hours changed, and he stopped using the treadmill :( . So I would say he used it for a year, then didn't for about 9 years, then used it again for about 3 months. I bought a stepper at the same time...used it for about 2 years, and then haven't used it :( . I keep thinking I will one of these days when the kids are in school longer hours.

We had one that I used for about 6 month. I lost weight and felt so good I joined a gym and quit using the treadmill. Then about 6 months later they changed the class scheduled at the gym and I quit going there, but didn't restart the treadmill. :( What I did find was that if I taped shows and then watched them while on the treadmill that I did really well and was more consistant. It is long gone, now I have to use the streets. Not quite as successful as the treadmill, since the TV doesn't go that far.

I had a treadmill when we lived in Washington state and had it set up in the family room where I could watch tv while I used it. I regularly used it while I watched the news so I got in 30 minutes of walking at a time. It was great to be able to walk, no matter what the weather was like outside.

We didn't bring it with us to Nevada because we didn't have a good place for it, it was too heavy to move a long distance, and now I can walk outside every day in the sunshine.

Check Craigslist or other classified ads for a used one--sometimes people are just giving them away to get them out of their house. That's how I got mine--a friend gave it to me. And I was able to sell it on Craigslist when we moved.:)

I have a my faux Schwin Aerodyne bike set up in our extra bedroom, along with a recumbant bike(I hate it, DH loves it). Mounted a tv/dvd on one of those wall stands.

I either ride the bike 45-50 min and watch tv or I do one of my videos.

I don't like treadmills, though I did use the one at MMC when I was there last Sept.

Due to hip problems I haven't been able to use my treadmill since Dec. I also put back on 30lbs of the 40 I lost last year.

Just had my first hip surgery Wednesday, and I'm feeling much better than what I thought I would.

This was hip core decompression, which I thought would be more difficult that the next surgery. Hip replacement on the other side probably in Oct.

I really, really miss not having been able to do the treadmill. I don't know how they are working ontheir computers, even at 2mph!

I always have to have the TV on, I either tape something or just watch what is on, On weekends it was always cooking on either PBS or FoodTV.

I too love to walk, but not around my area, as I too have too many hills, Once I leave the front door it is all downhill no matter which way I turn at the end of a long driveway. So leaving isn't bad at all, it is just the turn around to come back which is then all uphill! When we first moved here 30 years ago, not thinking I took my bike out for a ride. Great at first, then I had to walk the darn thing home! Learned my lesson then, never tried it again!

I'm hoping back on as soon as possible, which may be quicker than I thought. I'm allowed 50% weight bearing since the day of my surgery, but PT wan't able to see me until Thursday. I was very nervous to put that much weight on my bad leg, especially since the anchor leg was going to go through hip replacement in Oct, and the one that has been giving me real problems since Dec. But with some pain killers and crutches, I'm up and about pretty well.

Sorry for such a long response.

Also when weather turns unfriendly for walking it feels great to be able to get some in inside.

Good luck with your shopping.

good investment.

I bought my treadmill new about 8 years ago. I have used it on and off over the years. I have a notebook attached that I write down how far I went, calories used, dist, etc. I find that when I realize I've gained weight, I get back on it.

I just logged my 200 entry in the notebook. So 200 times over 8 years is not great, but it has helped me lose weight.

I use it less now because the kids always want to go on it when I'm on it, and it is annoying. Also my treadmill is loud and I have to turn the tv way up to hear a show. The neighbors must think i'm deaf. Newer treadmills are quieter and I've thought of buying one but DH will kill me if I buy another exercise machine.

All in all - I'm glad I bought it. It does collect dusk at times, but not nearly as much as my other exercise equipment (universal, utimate Gym, step machine and stationary bike.) I need another room to keep all the equipment in.

I say go for it.

Wow - great responses so far - thanks

I especially like the Craigslist idea. I'm also on Freecycle so that's a possibility.:whoopie:

I'm not a TV watcher, but I have a thing for the Nordic Trac that holds a book -presumably I could do the same thing for the treadmill. I guess I'd also better check with the Dr. about my knees and big toes :(

I've got one that I currently have in our pool bath. It makes a great place to store stacks of beach towels.

I do not like a treadmill. I MUCH prefer to walk outdoors. We live in southern CA, so I can walk outdoors year round. My goal is to walk 2.5 miles 2x a day. I don't always reach my goal.

My DH MUCH prefers the treadmill.

I have a treadmill and walk 1/2 hr every morning 5 to 6 days a week. I've tried exercise videos and always get out of breath since I have an irregular heart beat. I watch tv while I walk and I love it.

I used to walk outside but my allergies cause me to sneeze while walking in the nice weather and I hibernate in the winter so outside walking is out of the question.

I loved walking on the treadmill at the gym, so DH bought me one. But he bought a cheap one and I hated it because the quality and performance were so poor, so I never used it. If you are going to buy one, buy a decent one.

You are right, don't buy one unless it's health club quality(built to be used all day). One of my employess bought one from Sears and I think they replaced it twice under warranty. The first one died in 3 months, the other made it to about 7 months.

I found it very, very boring. It went from the bedroom to the living room and now it's in the garage. It was great to hang clothes from. We bought ours through Sports Authority but do not recall the brand. The first one the motor burnt after a short time and the company replaced it. There was an issue with that model after researching more. I know the warranty was more than 1 year. If you tried running on it smoke appeared.

I use one at the gym but for some reason at home just does not work.

Good idea about buying resale or at a yardsale as so many people do not use the exercise equipment they bought. Just research the brand so you do not get a lemon.

I use my treadmill and have been for about 10 years. I definitely prefer to walk outside but that is not always possible due to weather. I try to exercise at least 5 times a week and the treadmill is usually 1-2 of those. I also love to bike so try to fit that in as well.
If I am walking on the treadmill I can read a magazine and watch tv but if I am jogging I can only watch tv. Too much bouncing!

Good Luck!

Sue

I've used mine 6 days a week since 2001 although of course i'd prefer to walk outside in good weather but between the heat humidity and rain.... it;s good to have it.
I bought wireless headphones which really helps in not having to turn the TV's volume way way up. I watch a movie or a taped program (hooray no commercials) which makes the time go much faster.

I went to use ours recently and it wouldn't start. Darn.

If I bought another, I'd get an elliptical machine rather than a tread mill. The elliptical is MUCH easier on my knees. There is less/no pounding onto a surface, rather your foot/leg makes an elliptical movement without the foot leaving the pad. Try one at a fitness club or YMCA. See how your knees and toes feel vs. a Treadmill. Do one one day and the other a couple days later.

We have kept a treadmill in the bedroom for about 11 years now...we're on our 2nd and both dh and I use it 3-4 times a week each. I used to hate it, but did it anyway to supplement my non-gym days. A couple years ago dh bought me an ipod and now I look forward to my 45 min of walking. I've made up playlists of songs that keep me moving at a good pace....I have
"old 45's", "disco favorites", "girl groups of the 60's" etc. Music that I love makes the walking fun, but its a torture for my family if they're home and are stuck listening to me belt them out without hearing the music I'm listening to! :whoopie:

I like to walk in the mornings before work or evenings after work. When it is warm and light out at 6:30 am or 6:30 pm I walk outside. The rest of the year I use my treadmill.

That's funny. That's what I was going to suggest for Debby's cat.............
