My wife is a nurse and almost pulled the trigger on one of those travel nurse gigs. Apparently some fields of nursing still have more demand for nurses and the market is still good like ER, IC, and OR nurses. Dialysis is also still okay.

One of my daughters is an ER nurse who took her first nursing position in October 2020. Because most of her colleagues recently left to go into travel nursing and then all of the travel nurses were cut by the hospital, she is now the senior nurse on night shift. She's learned a tremendous amount in 18 months, but I think that is scary for the community.
Like many hospitals, her hospital will not re-hire a former employee who leaves to go into travel nursing.

In other headlines: First responders raced to New York after 911. Then they weren't needed anymore.
They all returned to their local towns and cities where they raced to come to provide critical aid and comfort to the incident victims of the worst terrorist attack on America.

Half the nursing staff in my former unit are travel staff, plus a travel manager . January 2021 there were 0 travel staff on my former unit. Recent HR ads posted for open RN positions advertise $10-20K bonuses but show a cut in the top of the pay range scale for RN's. The top of the range is now $5/hr less then it was last fall 2021.

So many hospitals are so short staffed do to this going on, along with not wanting to deal with Covid just retiring early.
So over worked, unappreciated.
Hats off to our hospital workers!
