I have decided to give my timeshare to a family member. Does anyone have any idea what I have to do to complete the transaction?

Not really enough info, but...

I have decided to give my timeshare to a family member. Does anyone have any idea what I have to do to complete the transaction?

I'll assume, just for the sake of discussion, that it's a deeded ownership of some sort (as opposed, for example, to a "right to use" (RTU) contract). If my assumption is correct, a new deed needs to be prepared and recorded. With (presumably) no money involved in this intra-family transfer, you can do all of the new deed prep yourself (using the current one as a template) and pay the applicable County to record it (figure $20-40 as a very rough range), or you could instead pay an outfit like LegalTimeshareTransfers in Georgia to do it all for you (it will cost you $150 (total) in this second option --- and it would help a lot if you can provide a copy of the current deed).

If it's a RTU contract, there is no deed and there is likley internal paperwork from the resort / resort group to complete in order to effect a transfer.

Hope this helps.

What Theo said, and (assuming it's deeded) after getting the deed back from the county after recording, you'd send it to the resort and there is usually a fee for changing the name on the account as he mentioned re: an RTU.

Really it's just a do-it-yourself 2 step process.

A good and important point, which I overlooked. It's a good idea to call the resort in advance and find out if they do in fact charge the "transfer fee" to which Jim has made reference; some do, some don't. For those that do, a representative figure is likley about $75, but maybe more. Yes, it's collected just to spend the 20-30 seconds it takes to change the name and address of the future maintenance fee bill recipient, but they charge it because --- well, just because they can. ;) You can send a copy of the new recorded deed and the transfer fee (if any) together to the resort and then call it a day (...or a former ownership).

please make sure first that the person even wants it ! Do they understand about increasing maint. fees, SAs, added costs to exchange, waiting to get an exchange, worth, cost and hassel to get rid of them ? I have seen a timeshare tear apart a family over the above. If all is understood and agreed upon, transfere and enjoy.

Some are worse than others. Trading Places manages one of mine and they charged $175 for the transfer. Highway robbery! But whatcha gonna do. They have you, so you pay what they charge.
