Here is the NPR story on Magufuli's death ...

In case you are wondering how Tanzania became totally free of covid...

[Magufuli] declared Tanzania "Covid-19 free" last June, saying the virus had been eradicated by three days of national prayer.

The article also includes a link to this article from the BBC (one which is not on Magulfuli's death, but whether Tanzania is really free from covid).

From the latter article ...

However, in a busy hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's largest city, a doctor told the BBC there had been a marked increase in admissions of patients exhibiting respiratory symptoms consistent with Covid-19 over the past two months.

I know Danny will reject these articles, but thought others would be interested.

The Tanzanians have "freedumb" ---- except for those spreading "false information"
They get locked up!

"The authorities have insisted there is little to worry about, and have taken tough action against those they accuse of spreading "false information"."

This story is from a month ago, before the president was admitted to the hospital. A vaccine would have saved his life and the lives of his citizens. President Maufuli's decision to deny the existence of the virus and reject the Covid vaccine for Tanzania was a fatal decision. The fact that he's now out of the way, is probably best for the future of Tanzania. This is a perfect example of how denial can turn deadly.

Tanzania refuses COVID-19 vaccines

I was logging in to report the Tanzanian President has died and the national funeral is scheduled this week - to find you all have previously reported it. Go Tuggers! The "new" President is a woman who is quite serious about COVID mitigation and about the importance of surveillance, so we should see (or the African CDC will begin to see) reporting from Tanzania in the coming weeks.

DannyTS raised some interesting questions in response to a few of my posts. I am not a virologist who can answer all of the questions re: herd immunity (and I do not play one on TV), but talking with those who specialize in the area are there are several issues at play (and they say many more; however, when they get too deep into virology and immunology/serology, they are over my head). One is adaptation of the virus - strains and mutants influence our ability to build herd immunity. We are still learning from those persons who are "carriers" - this is not the right scientific term, but you get the idea. Individuals who do not experience symptoms or become burden by full blown disease, but who clearly pass enough viral load to others who succumb.

I understand the disconnect with the numbers of reported deaths and the lives of most people. We have just under 550,000 deaths in the U.S. I live in a state with over 41 million residents - we're one of 50 states and 14 territories, including 5 major "inhabited" ones. But that number of deaths over just about a year from the same cause which is largely preventable; that spurs one to sit up and pay attention. This is why it's considered a big deal.

Another point DannyTS previously raised is about obesity. The "medical establishment" and the "food / nutrition establishment" have been warning of the ills of obesity for over 40 years. In the NIH, it's the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute; the FDA has several panels focused on food and nutrition; the CDC is involved because of their focus on disease control; Health & Human Services and the USDA - all have initiatives and/or programs to increase physical activity and to decrease obesity in the U.S. to promote well-being, to decrease disease burden, and to reduce prevalence of diseases and conditions that contribute to our top causes of death. Food pyamids, Recommended Daily Value (% RDV) measures, food labeling fights (nutrition value and serving sizes); fights with the Diary Board, the Meat industries (farmers, ranchers, and butchers); Sugar industry; and the fast-food industry, just to name a few. Not just pandemics, but SEVERAL of the top 10 causes of death in this country list obesity as major risk factor. Cancer, heart disease, stroke, dementia - including alzheimers', the list goes on and on. What more can we/they have said? "You might die" - that box has been checked for quite some time.

If you read the comments right before yours and the links to media articles, we are supposed to believe that the old fool is out and that the population was scared to death of Covid but could not express their oppinions due to fear of the president. So according to you and others now the new president who is "serious about Covid" will make things right.

A picture is worth 1000 words, this is from her own sworn ceremony. So the media is letting us believe that the former president, his vice-president and a cabinet member all died of Covid in the last month but this is how scared they are ;) There seems to a big disconect beween reality and what we read in the media.

I am not speaking about 40 year old programs but laser focused policies during the pandemic. I am not a specialist but I am sure if they had any focus on that area they could have come with some sensitive policies, recommendations, incentives and deterrents. As a matter of fact I saw evidence to the contrary, like arresting people for walking in the park or for violating some stupid rules about activities that make us healthier. Where was the CDC then? Maybe I missed it, I never heard Dr Fauci or others on TV asking people to walk a couple of miles a day, drink more water, eat little or no sugar etc. They wanted their masks, they put it in writing. How about everything else? Not that hard, no downside and if nothing else, the population could benefit for years to come. I guess when the focus is on vacinating everyone every six month, you do not want to dilute the message ;)

I'm interested in learning, what would your message be regarding obesity and COVID-19 or any other pandemic (including the pandemic of obesity declared a few years back)?
What would you say?
What would you offer as incentives?

We know wearing a mask, staying apart, and washing hands yields results; consistency is key. We could say losing several pounds to the obese is helpful as well.
Yet, with early variants we've seen younger, healthier people succumb to COVID.
What would your message be to the American people be in regard to obesity and the pandemic??

Let's brainstorm. You do not have any ideas?

"this is a perfect example of how denial can turn deadly" you say. Of course you follow the "science" and the "evidence", so you know. Except when you just peddle conspiracies lol. You know better than the ones close to him, here at the funeral

Guys, enough with your speculations and conspiracies, let's go back to the facts. A wedding in Nigeria

Most Mutated Covid-19 Variant Yet Found in Tanzania Travelers

A report submitted to the World Health Organization and regional bodies shows the strain has 10 more mutations than found on any other version, according to Tulio de Oliveira, director of Krisp, a scientific institute that carries out genetic testing for 10 African nations. Krisp, which discovered a new strain in South Africa last year that propelled a resurgence of infections in the country, found the new variant in travelers arriving in Angola from Tanzania.
