Going along with the other thread re knees, etc.....I have a torn meniscus. The only time it bothers me is in bed when I turn or when I get up from the sitting position, but not always. It's always a surprise whether or not it is going to hurt.
I am going to Mexico City and Acapulco on the 17th. I have surgery scheduled for the 20th of Oct. I am going to Las Vegas on Nov. 8. Will I be OK??

Quick Recovery After Getting Knee Scoped.

I was out & about within just a few days after (successful) arthroscopic knee surgery -- you know, got loose debris cleared away & torn cartilage smoothed out.

I've had two torn lateral meniscus surgeries, one on each knee. Both times, I was on crutches for a few days and then was a slow walker for another couple of weeks. I have heard the stories of people dancing around within days of the surgery, but that wasn't my experience.

So if your healing is like mine, you may not want to be walking too much in Vegas. If you were planning a hiking trip, I would say cancel it...but I think you'll be just fine standing at a slot machine! :)

I was in a bike accident and tore my left meniscus 9 years ago. Had orthoscopic surgery to remove about 40 % of it. It took almost 3 years to feel back to normal. For years it was fine but lately I have problems again. I get pain, swelling. Have been to physical therapy a lot and do a lot of PT exercises. Am trying to avoid knee replacement surgery, which I told was the next step.

The answer to your question might depend on how much damage you have and how much the surgeon has to do and remove.

Karen, I hope all goes well for you and that you will be sufficiently recuperated to come to our November TOTug meeting. It wouldn't be the same without you!

I had my left knee scoped for a torn meniscus too. I was unable to walk w/o crutches for about ten days . . . and with p/t I was back bowling within four weeks. That was back in 1988 or 1989.

I can't imagine doing anything too physical for my first couple of weeks, however.

My husband tore his several times playing racquetball (when he was younger). It didn't bother him too much and when they said do the operation he chickened out. :bawl: That was 20 years ago. They do laproscopy now so the healing is generally pretty good but the key IMHO is the physical therapy component-don't leave home without it!

had my meniscus fixed up about 5 years ago - I definitely agree with the PT discussion above - you should be in significant PT for the first 10 days - speeds the recovery significantly - I think you will be sitting playing the wheels! check with your surgeon re flying after surgery

good luck

I also had a torn meniscus and had surgery 5 years ago. Right after my surgery I felt great but then the pain set in for the next 2 days. Keep on top of your pain meds BEFORE you feel the pain! I used crutches for at least 7 days total. After that, no limitations for me.
