Too many weeks, not enough vacation

I'm looking for some thoughts on a dilemma I face. I have yet to enroll my two weeks, but probably will soon so I can take advantage of some additional options and reduced fees for trading. However, I have 4 weeks on deposit with II and my membership expires in July.

I ended up in this situation because I changed jobs in 2009, and have significantly less vacation than I used to, and we built a new house in 2010 and spent all my spare time working on it. There's no way I can use all of these weeks by July so I need to renew for a year or two, unless I can find something else to do with the weeks.

Compounding the issue, II has offered a bonus week for a 2012 week that I have yet to deposit. If I were to take advantage of that I'd end up with 6 deposited weeks and probably another year of II dues. If I keep the week until I enroll I could deposit it in the new account and avoid a trade fee later on, but I'd lose the bonus week. I find myself wondering if this is II's way of convincing me to extend for another year? :ponder:

So anyway, does anyone have any creative ways I can deal with my excess inventory? Also, any thoughts on whether to take advantage of the bonus week offer with II or pass?

Have you thought about bartering for your weeks with friends?

Need work done around the house and have friend who's handy and would accept an exchange week as a gift in lieu of payment?

What about friends or family celebrating big things? My parents always give their kids a week when they reach 5/10/15 years of marriage to celebrate their anniversary... makes a great wedding gift (or honeymoon gift!) - you save money because you don't need to buy a gift, they go on an awesome vacation.

You'll have to keep your old II account at least until you use the 4 weeks you have on deposit. If you join the DC, these weeks will not transfer to your new II account. So unless you plan to use these weeks before your membership expires, you will have to re-up.

Wow - makes me wish I was your BIL - so you could gift a couple weeks to me - like my BIL always thinks I should. :hysterical:

Rent 'em out, um, I mean "gift them" to strangers who you can reasonably expect to send you a thank you note filled with cash. ;)

I like TUG's reputation for being the best place to find out how to make the most of your timeshare ownership without actually breaking the rules. Here we like to "gently remind" folks that II has a written policy of not allowing exchanges to be privately rented, and we say that although it's not been reported often, it has been reported in the past that an II Member who breaks the rules may be risking the membership as well as any pending exchanges in the account.

Now without risking TUG's stellar reputation, everybody can choose to do whatever they like. :)

Piper, could you book exchanges with Friday check-in days anyplace within a short drive of home, and reward yourself with some weekends away, maybe even a few Fri-Mon long weekends? At least that way you can get some use out of them, if you're not able to find others who might be interested.

If I had a glut of exchanges that I didn't know what to do with I'd be very hesitant to add another to the party, but it sure is difficult to not take advantage of every perk! If you tell yourself that lately AC's aren't pulling very good inventory or relaxing the grids very much during flexchange, it might make it easier to not give up that week as a deposit. ;)
