Mountainside x 2
Maui Ocean Club x 2
Ko Olina Beach Club x 1
I have heard some people compare timesharing to plastic surgery: Once you start, it is sometimes hard to stop.
In 2011, we took advantage of the low resale prices to purchase additional weeks at Ko'Olina, Maui Ocean Club, and Mountainside.
Our total inventory now looks like this:
Mountainside, 2BR, Summer, Annual, Legacy Week
Mountainside, 2BR, Summer, Annual, Newly Purchased
Maui Ocean Club, 2BR, Mountain View, Annual, Legacy Week
Maui Ocean Club, 2BR, Ocean View, EOY Even, Newly Purchased
Ko'Olina, 2BR, Ocean View, EOY Odd, Newly Purchased
We have always loved Maui Ocean Club (our original timeshare purchase), but we envied the Ocean View units. So it made sense to upgrade our view with these cheap resale prices.
We love Mountainside during the summer, and it is within driving distance to save on airfare. With two weeks, we now have enough bedrooms to invite friends/family to join us.
Ko'Olina is a new discovery for us. We love it so much that we traded to Ko'Olina twice over the last couple of years. The flights to Honolulu are usually cheaper and more plentiful as well. Picking up an inexpensive resale week there was almost a no-brainer for us.
So you see, our timeshare purchases were thoughtful and reasoned - not made on impulse. We can afford the additional maintenance fees. We love these resorts and plan to visit them often (not trade) - so no regrets.
HOWEVER ... with these additions, we are now dangerously close to having more timeshare weeks than we can reasonably use ourselves. This reality is starting to sink in now as we plan out our vacations for 2013. Perhaps this predicament sounds familiar to some of you tuggers.
We are considering the option to enroll our two legacy weeks in DC to give us added flexibility for shorter stays. Our two weeks would be enough to get us DC Premier status. Or perhaps we will follow the example of some tuggers by renting out our Maui Ocean Club Mountain View unit at a modest profit (if friends/family don't want to use it). We have also thought about selling our Maui Ocean Club Mountain View unit. However, one benefit of the additional weeks is that we can now take advantage of 13-month windows to get the prime reservations we want. If for no other reason than that, we will likely not be selling anything (for now).
On the one hand I feel a little silly for owning more weeks than we can use ourselves, but on the other hand I don't feel any regret about our purchases. Strange how this psychology works. I would be wise to stay away from those plastic surgeons.
