I have heard some people compare timesharing to plastic surgery: Once you start, it is sometimes hard to stop.

In 2011, we took advantage of the low resale prices to purchase additional weeks at Ko'Olina, Maui Ocean Club, and Mountainside.

Our total inventory now looks like this:

Mountainside, 2BR, Summer, Annual, Legacy Week
Mountainside, 2BR, Summer, Annual, Newly Purchased
Maui Ocean Club, 2BR, Mountain View, Annual, Legacy Week
Maui Ocean Club, 2BR, Ocean View, EOY Even, Newly Purchased
Ko'Olina, 2BR, Ocean View, EOY Odd, Newly Purchased

We have always loved Maui Ocean Club (our original timeshare purchase), but we envied the Ocean View units. So it made sense to upgrade our view with these cheap resale prices.

We love Mountainside during the summer, and it is within driving distance to save on airfare. With two weeks, we now have enough bedrooms to invite friends/family to join us.

Ko'Olina is a new discovery for us. We love it so much that we traded to Ko'Olina twice over the last couple of years. The flights to Honolulu are usually cheaper and more plentiful as well. Picking up an inexpensive resale week there was almost a no-brainer for us.

So you see, our timeshare purchases were thoughtful and reasoned - not made on impulse. We can afford the additional maintenance fees. We love these resorts and plan to visit them often (not trade) - so no regrets.

HOWEVER ... with these additions, we are now dangerously close to having more timeshare weeks than we can reasonably use ourselves. This reality is starting to sink in now as we plan out our vacations for 2013. Perhaps this predicament sounds familiar to some of you tuggers.

We are considering the option to enroll our two legacy weeks in DC to give us added flexibility for shorter stays. Our two weeks would be enough to get us DC Premier status. Or perhaps we will follow the example of some tuggers by renting out our Maui Ocean Club Mountain View unit at a modest profit (if friends/family don't want to use it). We have also thought about selling our Maui Ocean Club Mountain View unit. However, one benefit of the additional weeks is that we can now take advantage of 13-month windows to get the prime reservations we want. If for no other reason than that, we will likely not be selling anything (for now).

On the one hand I feel a little silly for owning more weeks than we can use ourselves, but on the other hand I don't feel any regret about our purchases. Strange how this psychology works. I would be wise to stay away from those plastic surgeons.

:hysterical: interesting analogy....

Keeping your options open is always a good thing, and sine the Maui unit will rent well if/when you decide not to use it that might be your best plan. Alternately, if there are enough drive to locations that you might enjoy taking a short break a few times a year then the DC might be a good option for you, giving you a lot more flexibility, even despite the skim, esp. since you have units that did well wrt point allocation.

We are of the same club .... :) :)

If I were you I would definitely enroll the 2 eligible weeks in DC. There are many options with DC none of which you must use, but it is nice to have the option to use. One thing I never thought we would ever do is use DC for a cruise. However, we are in the process of planning an Alaskan cruise and land tour. The cruise would be on DC points and the land tour would be on our own.

Also, we have adult children that we often set up with stays for which they greatly appreciate.

DC has been good for extending our stay at locations we frequently visit. For instance, we use our owner week/s in HHI at the Barony and Harbor Club and then use DC for an additional 5 nights Sun - Fri for minimal DC points rather than a hit-or-miss II trade for an added 7 nights. You might extend your stay at any of the Hawaii locations from Sun - Fri or try another island one year on a Sun through Fri...

I stay away from the plastic surgery too

Totally agree with Beverley.

I would enroll all eligible weeks in the Points system before the huge June increase.

With the DC you have so much more options available than just the traditional weeks system. And the best part is that its optional and you don't have to use it if you don't want to on any given year.

This is an odd hobby and I agree with your analogy. And this is a great collection that you've pulled together, I hope paths cross one of these days at Maui Ocean Club or Ko Olina!!!

Best,

Greg

You Typed A Non-Surgical Mouthful.

Once you start, it is sometimes hard to stop.
I formerly had too many timeshares.

Now I have too many French horns -- not that there's anything wrong with that.

As for USA timeshares, we're down to 1 biennial & 1 triennial. Together, the 1 of those don't even add up to 1 complete every-year timeshare.

Meanwhile, the French horns keep on a-coming. I picked up my February Craig's List special from the horn fixer this morning. (It was just in for minor dentwork plus soldering silver USA dimes onto the 1-2-3 valve levers.)

As if that were't enough, The Devil recently made me bid on & win an eBay lightweight horn carrying case. It replaces a perfectly good horn case I've been carrying around for years but which I recently decided is too heavy -- either I had to replace it with a lighter case or rig up something with suitcase-style wheels. So I replaced it -- used it to take my Lawson 804 to a memorial concert I played in this afternoon.

Is this a great country or what ?

Oh Darn! I thought this was going to be a interesting discussion about whether you should spend your money buying a time share or paying for plastic surgery!

You Are Partly Correct, Sir.

Well timeshares are sure cheaper than a french horn addiction!
That's sure true when looking at today's (resale) acquisition costs.

Ongoing costs, however, are minimal with French horns (ditto trumpets, cornets, trombones, baritones, euphoniums, tubas, etc.) by contrast with those ongoing & rising & never-ending maintenance fee costs of timeshares.

There is also a possibility of appreciation in value with high-end French horns. I was semi-astounded to see that Ken Pope is asking $9,500 for a (used) Lawson 804. I bought mine (used) from the maker in 1986 for $3,300.

At the time, Mr. Lawson was getting about $5,500 for new 804s & he was selling'm faster than he could make'm. For new horns, his estimated delivery time was approximately 18 months after he received a firm order.

Who'd a-thunk ?

That is what we ended up doing this week while at Maui Ocean Club.

This has been quite an evolution of thought and attitude for me. I never would have believed that I could overcome my original negative feelings about the DC (and all its shortcomings). The shortcomings are still there, and I remain suspicious about how Marriott may manipulate inventory and processes for its benefit. However, I must operate in the system that now exists. Being fully informed is the best tool an owner has, and I am thankful to tug for providing that advantage.

GBLotter,

i just got a profile glimpse and I think I saw a little extra neck tissue flutter. I think that you can "Cure" this with a platinum newport Coast or two Gold Grand Oceans. LOL
