I wonder if anybody actually ever buys points at full price. Unless you just need to top a few off, it’s almost always an awful deal.

I have trouble even imagining a situation where it would make sense to buy points at full price. Maybe if you didn't quite have enough points for the big award you wanted to redeem? I think it would be very tough to find situations where buying points made sense.

When comparing the "cost" of using points vs. paying cash, you also have to consider that when you pay cash, you also EARN points (plus bonuses for status level, credit card usage, etc.) which you can use for future stays, and that also needs to be part of the calculation. With all of that, there are few situations where it would make sense to buy points, even using the discounted certificates, and maybe no situations where it would make sense to pay full price.

We are each entitled to our perspective. Ours don't align which is fine.
