My $0,02 worth, from the gallery where squirrels feed,
If the logo is going to include some type of image of a real object, the object in the image should be related to what entity is about. The suitcase and planes to me convey "travel". Whereas something that has a palm tree or a beach or a sunset conveys "vacation". Since TUG is more about vacation than about travel, I tilt design that evokes thoughts of vacation, not of travel.
When it comes to graphics, I'm also a minimalist. Every pixel needs to connect to the message, and if you can convey the same thing with fewer pixels, that is more effective.

This one is probably my favorite. I really like this palm trees and hammock image. It's clean, simple, yet conveys much about vacation. The hammock is a nice touch because it adds the element of relaxation. So the palm trees connote location, and the hammock adds calmness. The whole think is done in a single with simple and yet graceful line. www.tug.net could easily be added at the bottom in smaller font.
I think I like the sans serif font. But since the graphic is composed entirely of curved lines, it's possible that a rounded san serif font might work equally well, or better. Perhaps something like the slanted and rounded letters in my third selection, below.
On the other handed, the juxtaposition of curved lines and squared letters adds a touch of visual tension that might give the entire design a bit more "pop". If I were deciding I think I would want to see examples of both types.
The one below I like, except for the light colored outline. And if printed on light backgroud, such as a white tee-shirt darker print would be needed. I would like it more it used a sans serif font. In my own documents I used serif fonts for body text, but complementary sans serif fonts for titles, captions etc
This one has some nice elements, but I would simplify the graphic, using something like the palm trees and hammock. I like this font.
