Sadly Germany and the axis powers never had to fully answer for it. Country should have been saddled with debt forever. Or the country broken up as payments to those they wronged.

That did not work after the War to End All Wars and the Treaty of Versailles.

By the end of WWII most German Cities and their industries were destroyed. Germany was divided into 4 Zones - USA, British, French, and USSR. Berlin was also divided into 4 Zones. Eventually the USA, France, and Britain returned the control of their areas to the German Government (became West Germany). There was the Deutsch Democratic Republic (East Germany) but the USSR was in Control.

When I was stationed in Norddeutschland (1980's) in the USA Army I traveled on Special Flag Orders when I traveled to East Germany and/or Berlin. We did not recognize the East German Government Authority over us as we were Members of the Occupational Forces. At the Border between East and West Germany we would only deal with USSR Border Forces and not acknowledge the East German Border Forces. The same when we were leaving East Germany and entering Berlin and traveling between East and West Berlin (Check Point Charlie). When I traveled from West Berlin to East Berlin I was always in my Class "A" Uniform.

Germany and it's people did pay a Hugh Price for WWII. However the Western Allies decided it was better to help rebuild West Germany and encourage the West German people towards a more Democractic Society.
