We recently lost our Timeshare after the resort declared bankruptcy. We are thinking about purchasing again because we found the quality of the resorts we stayed at with our timeshare points was at a level that we would not get with a weekly rental. Does anyone own a timeshare that they can recommend above others? It seems that everyone has complaints but I would like to hear from someone who feels as we do.

It could be of use if you provide a geographic area in which you may be interested in purchasing a timeshare.

Also, always remember to buy resale!

Way to broad of a question without enough details. You almost need to start out in the New to Timeshares forum and answer the questionnaire;

I get it…

Growing up my parents had a timeshare in NH…one week in June in a tiny cabin on the lake - great memories.

As an adult I had picked up my DVC and again my family built some phenomenal memories. The last few years I have been adding small resales beyond the Disney bubble and its been fantastic - I may complain loudly about Wyndham IT, definitely recommend the rooms & allocations but it has really soured me on anything in a points system, but I do I really enjoy what I own, I specifically picked up weeks after that, All lock offs for both RCI & Interval so that we could use one side and trade the other.

For me the one that I picked up that surprised me the most was Marriotts Willow Ridge. It trades as well as expected but what was surprising is we actually really enjoyed our stay. So much so that instead of trading this year we are going back. Not so much for Branson, its fun but we actually really enjoyed the resort itself.

Timesharing for us has been outstanding this year…Think about how your old resort worked best for you and go form there. This isn't your first rodeo so narrowing down what you like might be easier.

Considering Willow Ridge as well. All are listed as two-bed but not lockoff. Are you able to book a lockoff unit - stay in one and deposit the other?

All owners at Willow Ridge can book lock off, based on availability. Not all units lock off, but it doesn't matter which unit you actually own. You can still lock off if the studio and 1BR units are available.

Interesting. Good to know. Are all Marriotts set up like that? Grand Chateau usually mention lock off units.

Resorts with lock offs may or may not be setup like this. Some resorts have 100% lock offs, like Ocean Point and 2BR at Grand Chateau. Others have some lock off and some dedicated. Willow Ridge, Harbour Lake and Grande Vista are like that.

No, some resorts have no lock offs at all. Some have a mix based on 2beds and others 3-beds.
Best to double check any specific resort as to whether the deed needs to specify that it's a lock off for you to book one

Yeah, the resorts in question are usually just Willow Ridge, Harbor Lake and Grade Vista as they are lower at cost but not usually deeded as lock off units.

If you want to trade into Marriotts, buy one of the Marriott traders:
Willow Ridge
Harbour Lake
Grande Visa
Grande Chateau
Manor Club Sequel

Go to the Marriott topic and see what the maintenance fees are for each.
Buy a 2 br that locks off into a 1br and Studio - then you will get two trades out of 1 maintenance fee.

Note: if you want to trade into the Disney Vacation Club resorts, do not buy in Orlando, since people who own a week in Orlando (usually) cannot trade into the Disney Orlando resorts.

Interesting that so many people have complaints? I thought you were going to say everyone has their favorite!
We agree with you - timesharing - if you "play the game right" -- is so much better than using hotels and the rooms are generally great! We timeshared full-time for 7 years (we had sold our house so had no other "home base") and loved almost everywhere.
Thus, I have written many articles for the Timesharing Today magazine describing many of the places we stayed --
Yes, there are so many I could recommend but it depends on what you prefer... location? size? high-rise or not? "luxury" or more "homey"?, busy city or quiet place...?

Complaints: It's important to note the subject of the complaints. Is it the resort itself or some perceived problem with the resort company? I'm not the biggest complainer about Wyndham but I get my licks in. Rarely is my complaint about the resort; Wyndham resorts almost always deliver.

It's like restaurant reviews on TripAdvisor. A one star review because the patron thought he was dissed by the receptionist says nothing about the food, which is the reason you went.

We had deeded float weeks at the same resort and used it for exchanging until things happened that made exchanging no good. After that we bought a Worldmark then a Vacation Internationale which are mid tier resort systems. We enjoy the flexibility of seasons, many resorts, any unit size and decent exchanges.

Do you prefer to trade in RCI or II? Or both?
