Learned two things. No eggs in an egg cream. Apparently "Jewy" is not offensive and it can be used in a headline.

I grew up on these thanks to my mother growing up in the upper east side. Ubet was great! I used to like vanilla ones

Until at least 1 person is offended, then we must all conform to their whim.

Headlines are added on after an article is written. In this one, they credit the article to another source entirely, and its headline was different.

I say "Jewy" is offensive, and seeing it attached as a reprint headline does not excuse it.

What Is an Egg Cream and Why Is It So Jewish?
And, more importantly, is it delicious?

As is often the case, context is important. The article OP linked in this thread is in The New York Jewish Week, which seems to be published by or with the Times of Israel based on the URL. The headline isn't really worded in a way I would have chosen if I were the one writing it, but I would give them a pass for not seeking to offend and owning the term. In some other context, I might feel differently. If I had been the OP, I would either not have posted it or would have disclaimed the word by marking it with a parenthetical "sic".

A friend from my UCLA days now lives in Miami. When she comes to California she stays with her brother in Pomona and we meet for lunch with our husbands at Canter's Deli in the Fairfax district as sort of a half way place. She is Jewish and grew up in Chicago before heading to university. She always orders an egg cream. Next time I will too -- now that I know it doesn't have "raw eggs" in it which is what I'd always imagined. I suspect I'll be disappointed thinking it should taste like a milkshake!

I have heard the terms Jewy or Jewiness many times and it isn't in any way bad or insulting for 99% of the time it is used. It is a word to describe a level of tradition the Jewish people do. Some do it more traditional or Jewish than others. I actually think its a word that Jewish people use because non-Jews don't know the levels of Jewish tradition that would make a Jew claim that it is more or less Jewish.

It tastes like a watery milkshake. We made them all the time as kids. It’s a watered down carbonated milk shake
