I'm surprised people still use CB radio
I have no recent personal experience with CB radios, but some long-distance truckers may still use them, plus potentially people in places where there is no cell phone service, amongst other uses.
"Breaker 1-9! Is anyone there?
Come on back truckers and talk to Teddy Bear!"
Ham radio (amateur radio service) is not the same as CB (citizens band radio). Citizens Band radio is short-range and requires no licence to operate. Ham radio operators can broadcast over very long distances and require an amateur radio operator's licence, just like a radio station, and have a call sign. Ham radio has been around a lot longer than CB radio and has a long history of helping in emergencies. I have no recent personal experience with CB radios, but some long-distance truckers may still use them, plus potentially people in places where there is no cell phone service, amongst other uses.
I understand the differences (freq & power, etc.)
with the internet and smart phones I'm surprised CB radio still around. I see CB rigs at truck stops and there is a CB repair shop off I95
Made me look up my dad's call sign, and I was surprised it shows he renewed his license in summer 2018. They haven't had an antenna on the roof and radio equipment in their addition for over 30 years.
