Old news (is that an oxymoron?) Ships- and restaurants and public institutions are inspected frequently by unannounced inspectors and graded (ever see one of those Grade A notices at your favorite eatery?) Those that have shortcomings have a certain amount of time to correct them and apply to be reinspected.

Thanks to the British tabloid for the alarm. We're glad the CDC works to keep people healthy.

The irony is these inspectors from USPH/CDC sometimes board from Puerto Rico and/or the USVIs that have little shacks that are less than stellar when it comes to food safety but have very little room for error regarding cruise ships.

With restaurants, it seems those that are problematic may fix things for a while, but they are the ones that seem to have repeat problems. Don't know if the same is true on cruise ships.

The "tabloid" comment would be a cheap shot if you were familiar with the British press, which you might not be. The word actually only means the way the paper is physically constructed not any reflection on content. In America, most tabloids are in the nature of the "National Enquirer" and are not serious journalism. In the UK, very few newspaper are still printed in the broadsheet style which is common in the US. The conservative "Daily Telegraph" of London is one of the few which still is. Most are physically printed in the tabloid style. That is simply the most common physcial printing style of newspapers in the UK.

Most US newspapers are still broadsheets, with the only exception I am award of in the serious press being one of America's oldest and largest newspapers, the "New York Post".

I boarded a cruise a few years ago that had several people taken off in ambulances with Legionnaires. We were offered a replacement if we decided not to board, we went anyway.

I was impressed with the protocols that were used, every cabin door, hallway wall and hand rail were wiped down with disinfectant every night. Every table and chairs were wiped down between diners in the MDR. We did stay away from the buffet. We did not get sick, and enjoyed the cruise, any day cruising where your bed is made and all meals prepared for you is a good day. :)

I read the restaurant ratings locally and see plenty of closures for vermin and cockroaches, no thanks.
