I think it's good idea - YMMV

It's a great idea.

Drove it twice, and could not understand the attraction of it. I have no plans to either drive there again. That road is dangerous and if having toll means the money goes towards maintenance, then it is a good thing.

Is it legal to charge tolls on the only paved road accessing a town?

I don't know. But I know that in San Diego there was a toll charged for the bridge to get to Coronado. I guess it wasn't the only way to get to the "island", you could have driven south and then back up, but way out of the way. The toll was stopped eventually after the bridge was paid for.

I wondered if there might be some kind of exemption for residents of Hana, but read the article and saw that might not be able to be allowed. It will be interesting to see how this develops.

I'm not a proponent of tolls so I would definitely rather they not do that. As far as the Road to Hana is concerned, I have done that enough like a lot of others here. It's really one reason Maui isn't our favorite island. Unless you drive that Road to Hana most of the island is not usable. That northern road isn't any fun either. But the rest of the island makes up for a lot.🤙🏻

We've driven that road many years ago ~ very scenic! If one of the main sources of revenue is tourism, this makes perfect sense.

I'm not against tolls, or parking fees, etc. as long as the money goes towards the maintenance of the road, parking lot facilities or whatever.

I like the idea of the toll roads but only for tourists and tolls for all roads. It would be easy enough to do. It couldn't be called a toll as that is unfair. It would be a nonresident road preservation fee added to all rental cars. Something like $12 a day seems fair enough.

They usually never do, that's why I don't like them. Lol

Can't they get money for maintenance from somewhere else, perhaps just increasing the TSO (timeshare occupancy tax)?

How many timeshares are in Hana? An increase like that would mean that many of us, who don't do the road to Hana, would be paying for the maintenance.

I am not for anymore taxes on timeshares on Maui. For a week at Hono Koa, we pay $502 in property taxes, and we own 3 weeks, so we pay $1,500 in property taxes at Hono Koa alone. Add in the additional money for the TAT. I don't really know what property taxes are at Westin, but they have to be as high or higher.

We rarely drive the Road to Hana, but if my sister wants to go in March, we are game. My BIL has pretty severe phlebitis. Sitting for 9+ hours is probably not going to happen.

Good idea. Perhaps they should also increase timeshare taxes to fund schools, police, public health measures and other things which have nothing to do with timeshares.

We did a van tour with Ekahi many many years ago, then drove it a few years later. Van was far preferable over all.
I really never understood what all the fuss was about, just a twisty country road.

The road round the top, Kapalua to Kahului is another matter altogether, truly white knuckle in places !

Some YouTube videos, search Kahekili highway.

I think my worst was the old Loveland Pass in Colorado, going east to west, uphill in the outside lane, humongous drop off the edge.

Several years ago when we were on Maui for 3 weeks we drove around both ends of the Island. Both were fun and beautiful with many stops.

Well, you should do it on a bike with a very short wheel-base. It is awesome. I've done it almost 20x all the way around. Then add an equal # part/most of the way around, then return back the same way, because for a few yrs they kept closing the road at various spots for maintenance. Yes, cars should stay off that road. Leave it for the locals and cyclists.
Showing what the short wheel-base of a bike does for you: in a car, I thought the Road to Hana was no fun, to be polite. On a bike, the West Loop, as that road (Kapalua to Kahului ) is known is awesome. but yes, Kahekili is the official name, now that you mention it

Yup, I remember that one in the snow back in the mid-'80s. The one that made me think I was going to die was near there. On teh way to Winter Park from Denver, Saturday AM in a white-out blizzard. What is that? Is it Berthoud Pass? I don't remember the name. We inched along at 2 mph basically not knowing where the edge was but knowing it was a deathly drop off the edge, and hoping nobody was as foolish as us to be coming the other way.

And yet it's not recommended to drive the "backside" of Hana. Right now some of it is closed due to maintenance and your rental car agreement can be invalidated for taking that route. There was a recent landslide approximately 1 hour 20 minuets drive past Paia or 20 minutes past Ke'Anae. Don't know if that caused the entire road to be closed.

That is what makes this toll idea interesting. I wouldn't do it a 2nd time, but I wouldn't be surprised if the main goal is to deter tourists from doing it at all. Less traffic means less need for maintenance, other than any caused by a severe storm, If the toll goes in, many commercial businesses in Hana will suffer.
