Hundreds of thousands of New York City residents, in particular those from the city’s wealthiest neighborhoods, left as the coronavirus pandemic hit, an analysis of multiple sources of aggregated smartphone location data has found.

Roughly 5 percent of residents — or about 420,000 people — left the city between March 1 and May 1. In the city’s very wealthiest blocks, in neighborhoods like the Upper East Side, the West Village, SoHo and Brooklyn Heights, residential population decreased by 40 percent or more, while the rest of the city saw comparably modest changes....

Once again -- the elite have privileges that they fail to acknowledge, yet never fail to pontificate to everyone else their brand of standards that 'all' should live by. (Sorry -- that was a soap box moment!)

It’s kind of creepy the way this data was assembled.....if I understood correctly, they used smart phone data to see where the people were.

I don’t resent the rich ... But don’t care for their elitism. Same for Hollywood.

I did notice an slight increase in cars with NY tags...they were probably going to their weekend homes in the Poconos.

People that have 2nd homes are often not part of the elite. It is unfair to characterize them. Many are middle class hard working families that might rent in the city and buy a modest second home for family enjoyment. I know many people like that.

true, in my area many have second "rental" homes on the Outer Banks N.C.
(which they couldn't escape to ! )

When you are retired & middle class ; you can have a second home in Florida or in OBX to get away from the cold temperatures in Virginia .

I didn’t mean that they were. I know the folks from NY that have weekend homes in the Poconos are mostly middle class. They most likely pay much less every month for their Pocono home mortgage and taxes than what they pay in rent. I don’t blame anyone for wanting out of NYC!

Well, DUH!!! If you have the means, and are faced with the probability of staying put where many of your neighbors are falling ill, why WOULDN'T you skidaddle to someplace considered safer?
A neighboring county here- Blaine, home of Sun Valley and VERY wealthy, at one time was the highest per-capita infection rate in the country, nearly emptied out when SIP was imposed. Those who DID get sick there were transported here and to Boise because the small hospital there was inundated with Covid-19 infections. That made those other places appear statistically to be dangerous because of already sick people were imported to otherwise healthy places.

Well duh, you might stay away from your second home because the local authorities request it of you with the explanation that their medical infrastructure is not equipped to deal with part-time residents on top of full-time residents falling ill, especially if the part-timers bring the virus with them?

That's what we did, stayed in MA and away from Hilton Head Island, right up until this week when SC opened. Even now this week Don's there only to check on the house and stain the back deck. We're hoping to bring family with us in late June, them for a couple weeks but the two of us for a good long stay. I'm so looking forward to getting there - I've missed HHI!

My Brother lives in Philadelphia but happened to be at his 2nd home in FL when all this hit. He told me he was going to stay in FL as he felt safer there. He wasn't born rich. He, like me, started with $0 and earned every dollar he has the hard way...

George, no one is begrudging how those with means acquired it. It's just that those with the means to get to 'safety' are going to do it. Nobody chooses to be a 'sitting duck' of they can avoid it.

Jim! Hello Jim! Over here! :hi:

I didn't choose to be a sitting duck but rather, chose to stay-in-place as much as possible in the area which *didn't* ask me to stay away. From what I gather talking to HHI neighbors, about half of the part-timers in our community have been there through the winter and into the late spring. That's far fewer than normal for the season.

Here’s a twist. New law in NY allows renters to stay put. Sad that people will take advantage of others. But the law is the law.
“The short-term renters moved into their beach-town pads on Long Island before the coronavirus struck and Gov. Andrew Cuomo enacted a moratorium on evictions till at least Aug. 20 to protect those financially struggling amid the pandemic.“

If the government passes a law like that they should open up their pocket books to pay the going rates. Then back charge the renter. Same bs is happening to some of my apartments but a lot less money and they were set tenants. But don’t or can’t pay.
