Right when I thought I sorta understood what was going on, something like this happens:

This 3 BR lock-off in Surfside Beach, SC, prime summer weeks, did not attract a single bid, albeit it's biennial. This would be a very good starter for someone interested in dipping their toes into the TPU game.

This fixed week 34 in Virginia Beach attracted 40 bids to close at $4,850.

Is this the case of a simple bidding war for the latter? Maybe I don't understand that VA Beach is that much more desirable than the Myrtle Beach area.

Any thoughts?

I would say it is primarily the maintenance fee. $745 versus $625x2 per use.

My first thought is one is on the ocean, the other is a mile away. Big difference in demand.

And, Virginia Beach is an anomaly - many resales there happen at prices that don't make a lot of sense vis-a-vis the entire market, based probably on an 'undersupply' if you will.

The 3 bedroom the seller ended the auction early

Either they had a title issue or sold it from another ad, venue. The last one of these that sold was right at $2100 all in. I know about this one as I had a snipe bid set that didn't fire.

Luky987 moved to "private" feedback in Oct 2011 - to me that raises red flags for shill bidding and other shenanigans.

Looking at what I can see of the bid history also raises a "shill bidding" red flag.

I would throw this result out of my data set - 60% chance it was "faked".

Just one very experienced eBayers opinion.

I recently bid on 2 weeks at the same resort.. identical weeks same seller

Both had 2012 fees paid and 2012 usage available to the buyer

one had closing costs and transfer fees paid

the second started bidding at $99 and the transfer fees ($299) were to be paid buy the buyer

I won the first one at $1.50 (all closing costs and transfer fees paid)
I didnt bid on the second one, but it sold. I dont remember the winning bid, but the buyer paid at least $400 (the starting bid plus transfer fee)

Ebay is not an efficient market place...in fact there is no efficient secondary market place for timeshares... so you are likely to find lots of cases where, what something sells for doesnt make sense.

Greg, yes $2100 would be more like it for the SC unit.

Hypothetically, splitting this unit if it were a week 27 would yield 82 TPUs (I checked). I was tempted to come out of my "buying freeze" for this one.

With the ebay final value fees of at least 10%, $500 is a pretty expensive shenanigan. Personally, I would not go near anyone with a 95% feedback anyway.

I had also suspected the premium effect for VA beach, but $5000? (assuming it's legit)

Market inefficiencies is a great way to summarize it and I agree. Funny thing is, ebay likes to brag about how it makes markets more efficient (great place to sell hot items and unload close out items). I know this because I have been to their ebay Live! conferences.

As buyers, we benefit from these so-called inefficiencies.. don't we? Sellers in general (not PCCs) roll the dice...
