The psychology of coronavirus fear.

There is an addictive component to the daily news regarding covid. The tone of the broadcast network's nightly news announcers seems designed to heighten any anxieties one might have about the virus. To me, it is far better to read/research about what is going on with the pandemic from a variety of sources and determine the best course of avoidance of the virus based on facts combined with my personal comfort level for activities while following social distancing and wearing my mask.

While I strongly agree with this statement, the problem is with the flood of information (and misinformation) in the current environment. Also, a lack of access to reliable and non biased sources of news and information makes finding accurate and useful information even harder. I am not wanting to restart the lack of trust in the media aspect of this consideration, but in the current environment, one almost needs to search the latest peer reviewed (reputable) medical journal(s) for info. Our media outlets fail us when they value ratings (above all) over their obligation to function in the public interest.

So true. We were so much better off when we had half hour nightly news shows on the Network channels than we are today with multiple 24 hour cable news channels trying to outdo each other by scaring the Hell out of us...

The coronavirus has had a horrible effect on us because the lack of socialization has resulted in my husband going totally downhill. Plus every time he has to wear a mask it is the first time and he doesn’t know how to put it on. Yesterday in the middle of his doctor appointment his mask was gone, taken off while he was in the X-ray room.he also doesn’t understand social distancing He could not get in a rehab facility after his fall, most on lockdown . I cannot go visit long term care facilities. Some of the women in my caregiver support groups have had to move their spouses to long term care and are unable to see them.

@rapmarks I am so sorry this has been so tough on you and your husband. Sending you warm hugs and hopes for an easier tomorrow.

I forget that there is news on TV because I rarely watch it, and even then it's usually local news. I read 90% of my news from 3 newspapers (online). Those of you watching the news on TV, you can easily opt out. I only have a hint of what is being discussed by reading TUG. It's always similar arguments. I would highly recommend turning off the TV news if you feel that it is biased or sensationalized.

I have had to go out more due to having my daughter. Like doctor, dentist and eye doctor visits (6 in the past month) as well as visits to Target and her school. I did not understand before why people did not like wearing a mask. However, the past two weeks have been hard. I can barely breath in a mask, it is hot, my glasses fog up, it falls off my ears and people can’t hear me talking. Sometimes I get so irritable when I am out and I realize it is because the mask is stressing me out.

COVID is like getting into your car every day. You have no control over what the other drivers do. All you can do is drive responsibly and the rest will take care of itself. It’s called fate and faith. Live like there’s no tomorrow as death will visit us whenever it sees fit.

I started a thread that questioned how many of you have decided to cut off your cable. You'd be surprised at how much better your mental/emotional heath is when your not watching the poison known as CNN, Fox news, etc. Just like what we eat impacts our bodies health, what we take in through our eyes and ears has a profound impact on mental health. The level of fear surrounding Covid is out of control.

I suggest the following:

It goes beyond cable - it's media, period.

It's not limited to covid. I am sure that tv has ruined my dad's senior years. He's very scared that the another certain country is going to take over our country. He thinks it's imminent. He will not listen to anything otherwise. We simply cannot have a conversation anymore because he's furious that I don't agree. It's so very sad.

I distinctly remember as a kid- maybe middle school- being taught how to consume news. We were taught that different news sources had different biases/perspectives. We should consume news with that in mind. Critically evaluate what the news was saying and also factor in the source. The gist was that it was our *obligation* as a citizen in a democracy to be informed. But also skeptical/critical. We were told to consume multiple sources of news- at the time the recc was two news sources per day, and you should intentionally choose one from the opposite ideological slant from that you yourself held closest.

Nowadays there is indeed incredibly biased irresponsible news. It should not exist and it’s just bad. But it exists because people consume it. So the “fault“ lies with the American people.

Its simply not that hard though to find fairly reliable/responsible news sources that are slightly left of and slightly right of center. Pick two and check in daily. Otherwise don’t get sucked in to “breaking news!” 24/7. I don’t get the drama. It’s absolutely not true that you can’t be an informed person these days by consuming news. Just pick good sources, don’t gorge, engage your critical thinking (because even solid news sources will have biases, this is the human condition), verify stuff that seems extreme/out there/especially salacious, and doubt any news source that paints the “other side” as uniformly stupid and ill intentioned.

Simple enough that a child could grasp it. But somehow this is getting painted as being insurmountable hard nowadays...

This is still taught. My daughter had to do a media project like this in school.

Couldn't agree more!

My biggest problem with the media is there seems to be no distinction between the Editorial Page / Commentary / Opinion and the news pages / programs. “Reporting” is mostly a thing of the past with a few exceptions.

Cheers

You know what else drive me nuts? Sports announcers giving their opinion on teams, coaching decisions, players, plays etc. It drives me nuts. Call the game but otherwise shush!

The other thing it is sorely lacking -- investigative journalism at the local level.

yes, seems simple enough
Many people believe they are viewing good and reliable news sources and other people think those exact same news sources are biased and unreliable.
And many people like it that way (it's a profitable strategy )

For me, it is Faith that guides me to the right path. Often it felt like the wrong path but on reflection I see it was a good path.

Well from my perspective, your 86 year old stepdad sounds pretty smart for wanting to avoid big holiday family dinners, restaurants, and people coming back from travelling out of state.
Yes, I said that. I couldn't live with myself, if he got Covid because he was around our big family. I am 65. Somewhat concerned for us, but we had the immunity months ago. Not sure how long it lasts. We had Covid 3/1-3/11.

What I need to add is this: isolation and being alone, those are risks that my stepdad has to worry about. He is literally alone, not even a caring neighbor because he fell while scooping his snow early one day, and he couldn't get up right away. He did get up, and Rick told him later that night that he would scoop his walks. His driveway is sloped and faces north and is really slick sometimes.

When he fell, not one neighbor rushed over to see if he was okay. He could have died out there, had he hit his head on the concrete. It's not the neighbors' fault, necessarily, because we all live in the backs of our houses, where the kitchens and family rooms are. Us too. We live in the same development. I see out of my backyard 99% of my waking hours. The front of the house is a place I don't spend much time. It's just a formal dining room.

same here !

But perhaps "Faith" as it relates to accurate and truthful news may be different .....

Don't forget "Analysis" in there. Analysis now just seems to be another form of Opinion.

Although many forms of media are a symptom, the root problem is the lack of critical thinking ability in individuals.

While I agree with this point, it is worth noting there is a scarcity of programming which asks much (intellectually) from the individual.

...I can't find ONE reputable, reliable, unbiased news source out there any more.

Might you care to share the two media sources you peruse?

Agree but the local Cincinnati paper won a Pulitzer last year on the Opioid Disaster in Appalachia. Not at all sure the Pulitzer means as much as it did in past times but that series was excellent

Another recent series on the mess at Cincinnati City Hall was well done. Three of nine council members have been arrested and indicted for corruption with one serving time already.

But generally speaking, most articles are run of the mill.

Cheers
